Drive to South America Help

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Drive to South America Help

Hello,

I'm planning on driving to South America from LA, California from the end of May 07 till end of August 07. I have a few questions:

1) Is proof of immunizations required to enter any country?
2) Is it possible to sell the car in South America (Chile or Argentina)?
3) If 2) is impossible, where in Argentina or Chile can you ship the car back to California?
4) Is it true there's a ferry from Panama to Venezuela?
5) How much money do you think I should budget for the 3 month trip?
6) Anyone interested in making the trip with me?
7) What are some (top5) can't miss places in Central America and Western/Southern South America (not going to Brazil)?

Thanks

1) not as far as I know, though it never hurts to get a yellow fever shot anyway
2) there is another thread on selling your car in SA; search the forum on 'sell' and 'car'
3) see above
4) yes, although I cannot tell you its exact route. Search for 'Darien gap' and 'ferry'
5) I don't know the cost of fuel; other than that, you should be able to get by comfortably on 30 USD a day, including accom
6) I am, but I can't :)
7) The deserts/salt plains in the Bolivian/Chilean border region, although you shouldn't go in there if you don't have relevant driving experience (and a 4WD); Patagonia, esp. ruta 40 (the same applies); the road from Asuncion (paraguay) to the Bolivian border (the same applies); Yungas (Bolivia); the Ecuadorian Andes

happy travels, Niels

Quoting elbarto83

1) Is proof of immunizations required to enter any country?

I do believe that some of the countries have a requirement to have yellow fever, but only if you are coming from a region with yellow fever. As you are travelling overland, it might be best to get this.

Of course, you should probably get all your shots up to date anyway. Polio, typhoid, tetnaus, and HEP A & B.

As to some Q’s and my A’s

1) Is proof of immunizations required to enter any country?
You will be travelling in Tropical countries and you are obliged to get vaccinations for several Tropical dieses I would look it up as most countries will only allow you in vaccinated.
2) Is it possible to sell the car in South America (Chile or Argentina)?
As to selling the car in Chile or Argentina, it’s a possibility but it will have to pass through a process of Nationalization which really means it will be “taxed” and heavily, you best bet would most likely be take it back home.

3) If 2) is impossible, where in Argentina or Chile can you ship the car back to California?

Yes, you can ship it form any country….. its expensive but its being done all the time.
4) Is it true there's a ferry from Panama to Venezuela?

I believe there is also a ferry from Panama to Colombia which would be most likely cheaper.
5) How much money do you think I should budget for the 3 month trip?

How much moony, I would say no less than US $100 per day for everything and could go upwards if you like a more expensive life style.
6) Anyone interested in making the trip with me?

Not at this moment, thanks all the same.
7) What are some (top5) can't miss places in Central America and Western/Southern South America (not going to Brazil)?
I know some parts of South America, like Cartagena de las India’s in Colombia, all the capital cities on your way down for each country, Machu Pico, as one in Peru and the Big Island of Chiloe in Chile, as well as Tierra del Fuego in Argentina…….. I would say the list is a bit longer than 5 in each of those regions…..

PS; Most South American countries don’t ask for a Visa if you Are from the USA, Brazil does for American citezens.

I would also and always do recommend the South of South Amercia and especially the Patagonia, in our summer months from November to April you will find it acceptable the weather and you would arrive to the tip opof the South, the Land of Fire.. .

See this short video clip of mine of one of the interesting sights you can see before arriving there, in a city named, Esquel and its antique steam engine train ….

There is no Ferry between Panama and any other country and hasn't been for at least 10 years now.

You'll have to load your car on a freighter it will take at least 10 days until you arrive in Cartagena or Guayaquil probably more like a month all in-figure $2,000 minimum.

The shouldn't miss place is Colombia- a fabulous place full of friendly welcoming people, towering mountains, vast rainforests, endless beaches, roaring rivers, beautiful cities full of culture and music and of course gorgeous women.;)

Sam Salmon is right, about the ferrys from Panama to Colombia.
Guaquil/Ecuador,Callao/Peru,Valparaiso/Chile would be a possibility for shipping a car back.
I would say,far to expensiv if it is a old cheap one.
