Hi everyone

Going to be in South East Asia for three months. Is it worth visiting Myanmar too? I've not heard many travellers commenting on here. Whats it like there in comparison to Thailand?

Thank you for replying in advance

My wife and I spent 3 weeks there back in March/April 2006 but that was in the dry season and it was pretty hot!!! Even so, we found it to be one of the most amazing, friendly, cheap and enjoyable countries in Asia.
We did Yangon, Inle Lake, Mandalay, Bagan and Ngapali Beach.
Myanmar has a monsoon climate with three main seasons. The hottest period is between February and May, with little or no rain. Rainy season exists from May to October and dry, cooler weather from October to February.
Looking at the rainfall charts for Yangon in June, July, August and September, it gets one helluva lot of rain.
I believe the best months to go are November thru January when it's dry season but the temperature hasn't soared.

I went to Myanmar last year and loved it - amazing people and country. I went in June and it was incredibly hot and humid. I found it friendlier than Thailand, not as developed and much poorer, and not nearly as touristy. When i was there (and i believe this is still the case) credit cards could not be used and there were no working ATMS, so you must take cash with you into the country in the form of US$. Myanmar kyat can then be bought in the country on the black market.

obviously there's a big debate about whether tourists should go to Myanmar, and it's a personal decision as to whether you decide it's right to go or not.

I spent a week in Myanmar, and i have to second wotthefiqh that it was very friendly, cheap (except for the entrance + camera fees) and totally enjoyable. I definitely do think its worth the visit, and the Shwedagon Paya in Rangoon, to me, rivalled the Taj Mahal in beauty and splendour - a sight not to be missed

Do go to Myanmar, I have lived and worked here the last 2 years and love it. Best time to travel for good weather is October to February. Places not to miss are Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inley lake and further north if you can manage it. The west coast beaches at Napali are as good as any in Thailand as far as the water and beach is concerned. There are no fast food chains or shopping malls in Myanmar, no sky train or rapid transit of any kind so its not much like Thailand at all. The pollution is less and you won''t find a prostitute on every corner like you do in Bankok either, its refreshing in that way. The people are friendly, its cheap and safe. I am returning for a third year in August, leaving in a couple of weeks for a month in Africa and then to the U.S. for a month.
