I'm unsure if you can even get an Indian visa online like you can to places like Australia. When I got a visa for India last year, I had to post my passport away to Sydney to get the visa granted (the closest Indian Embassy to where I live). So unless something new has come in during the last 12 months or different rules apply to UK passport holders than Australian passport holders, I think you may need to take your passport in to get the visa rather than apply online. If you are going to be travelling to other Asian countries before India it might be cheaper to apply for the visa there, but depending on how you are planning on travelling ie on the go all the time or stay put for a week or more in one place, well it might be a bit inconvenient to get it processed while away just to save a tiny bit of money.

Yes, you have to apply in your home country. I am having to fly home to NZ from America, to get both my Indian and Japanese (interview process) visas. Though if you wish an overseas post, and being without your passport in a foregin country, simple apply from where you are.

Plus there is no cheap method, every Indian embassy will have the same amount in which ever currency. Go to to find your closest embassy.
