I'm flying back to London in a few days and wondered what you can take as hand luggage now to the UK. Do you still have to fit everything into a tiny clear plastic bag? Or can you now take a small backpack or handbag? Can someone who has flown to the UK recently help me out please? I want to know how much shopping I can do in Bangkok
I'd be very grateful...! Thanks.
If it's anything like Canada, the carry-on rules are constantly changing. You have to check the government's travel site (it's called CATSA here) to see what's allowed, what's banned and what amount of liquids you can take in your carry on.
It's ironic you asked - weve been working on TV spots at work for Canada's air-transport authority. Very, very few people know where to look, let alone that there are still restrictions on what you can bring on a plane. Water bottles are still a no-no, and our clients told us some unbelievable stories about what people try to carry through (like a cooler full of beer).
With the plastic bag it has got to be ziplock. In America I had an experience last year not long after these new rediculous laws come in to effect where I had a liquid paper pen in my carry on bag and it was in a clear plastic bag incase the lid come off or something. When the bag went through screening they wanted to check the bag and when seeing the pen in the bag they wouldn't let me through with that liquid paper pen because it wasn't in a clear ziplock bag! Like I've got a bomb in a liquid paper pen. The world is getting very paranoid now so I wouldn't take any liquids/makeups etc at all in your carry on luggage to avoid any hassels at security.
Yes all your liquids must be under 100ml and sealed inside a zip lock bag - we fly in and around the UK all the time and this has not changed - you can get zip lock bags just before you go through security where they will advise you what needs to go in - all cosemtics that are liquid (mascara, gloss etc etc) toothpaste, perfume, hand creams etc all need to go in. Dont even bother trying to take water through - it will be confiscated but you can buy some once you get through security check. You will be asked to remove your shoes also so it is an idea to where slip on shoes or ones that are easily removed. Lap tops are expected to be removed from their case and put through the x-ray machine seperately.
Oh and you can only take one reasonable sized bag through also so no point showing up with 4 or 5 bags as you cant take them on board - although again the check in staff should check with you what you wish to take on as carry on the plane!

If you are just flying into the UK then you dont need to worry about liquids as it only applies to going through security when your flying out a UK airport.
