I plan on being in Peru/Chile/Bolivia area this September. I was wondering what are the laws in these countries on buying a dirtbike (not a street bike) and traveling on it for a week or two. It's something I've always wanted to do. I travel very light, usaully a small back pack, the size of a book bag and that's it. I plan on buying a dirtbike form a local and either riding it til it breaks or selling it to another local for dirt cheap. Would the police give me alot of hassle for this? Can I ride a dirtbike on most of the roads down there? Any comments or advice would help alot. Please be as blunt as possible. Thanks!

It don't think any specific rules apply; SA traffic isn't particularly 'ruled' in general... :)

As long as it has lights and brakes, the traffic police should stay off your back; since you're likely interested in smaller, less-traveled roads, the other traffic shouldn't pose much problem, either. I'm not sure where you could buy one, though.

Finrad... this sounds like a great idea and will be close to as extreme as the time we dead reckoned on snowmobiles from Anchorage to Fairbanks with nothing but a map and compass... good times and let our journeys continue... ROCK ON BRO!!!
