when you say money belt are you talking about a bumbag type thing or something worn under clothes? I was planning on carrying a day pack during the day, with money, camera, documents etc - do you think this is a good idea?

I usually wear a bum bag, around my waist. It fits inside my clothes, if I want to sleep on the bus or walk around anyplace that is dangerous. U can also get money belts, that lie flat against your stomach, so they are unnoticable under your clothes. I would not carry doccuments and money, in a day pack, that can be snatched by somebody speeding past u on a motor bike. I dont travel with a camrea or any stuff like that. If your camrea etc is small enough to fit inside your clothes, I would do that, in case somebody snatches your bag.

Thanks Mel,
I could probably fit my camera inside my bumbag, I reckon its small enough. What do you think is necessary to carry on you day to day - besides money?

I think, just suncream and mosquito repellant and water.
Thats all I take. And sometimes a book. Also the name and address of my guesthouse, in case I forget where it is and how to get back there. That happened to me, in one city. I left all my stuff at a hostel and then went out. I did not even bring the travel book, in which the name of the hostel was. Later, I realised that I had no idea where the hostel was, the name of it, or the subway stop it was at.
Sometimes I also carry my travel book around with me, during the day, depending on where I am going, and if I will need information from it.

OMG how did you find the hostel?? Did you get all of your stuff?

Sounds good, I would have been carrying half my backpack around with me daily!

I had to bite the bullet and explain my embarassing situation, to a local person. Luckily the first local I told knew of the hostel, when I described it.

I stayed in My Phangan Resort along Ban Kai beach, halfway between Thong Sala and Haad Rin. It's just a 15-min songthaew ride away to and from Haad Rin, so it was quite convenient for me during the FMP. There were rides waiting all night at Haad Rin for those heading back to their resorts from the party. I paid THB50 going to the FMP and THB 100 on the way back.

The resort is a bit more expensive than the one recommended by Mel, though, and the beach isn't much for swimming. I did love the sunsets, though, and the idea that I'm quite near the two ports. The staff were really nice and helpful and the rooms were very clean.

In terms of security, I was pretty much moving around with my sling bag with some money, my dslr, and my passport. Felt really safe, even during the FMP. You just really have to be as careful with your belongings as you are anywhere else.

Check out my pics from Koh Phangan and the FMP -

Have fun! I sure had a blast when I was there :)
