About 20euro the last time I made that trip mate...I may well have been ripped off though!! Get the bus, it's much cheaper and just as handy!

If you take a meter taxi, it should cost 250-300 Baht. If they won't put the meter on, it probably means they will overcharge you. You can get the express bus (AE2) which is 150 Baht and runs from the airport to KSR every hour. It doesn't stop very often so is quick,

Hi,

Is the Koh san road the best place to stay when just off a flight in bkk? We were going to book online before we got there for the first night or so, so that we're not trudging around looking for somewere to stay, but I think this way We could end up picking somewere that is misleading online. Does anybody recommend just turning up and finding a hotel/hostel or would you recommend booking in advance for the first couple of days?

Thanks
C

The Airport Express Bus, kiosk near door 8 next to taxi sign-up desk, stops running around midnight.. If you arrive at the airport and finish immigration, etc. after midnight you may have to take a taxi.

When you take a taxi from the airport don't bargain the price of the ride or you will end up paying more than the meter fare. Adding the 50 baht surcharge and paying the tolls are normal charges added to our taxi fare. For the return trip to the airport you do not pay any surcharge just the meter fare and any tolls.

You might be able to find some lodging in the Khao San Road area without any reservations during the summer "low season" period. But, you will be lugging your bags around with you and some of the cheaper places may be filled up.

P.S. you can also take the free shuttle bus to the new bus station, located at the transportation center, and take a cheap city bus into town for around 35 baht. If you get off anywhere in the city a taxi ride from that bus stop to your hotel will not cost too much (you save the 50 baht surcharge and toll charges right off the bat)

The bus rides will take longer than the Taxi. The taxi meter price is for everyone who can fit in the car. Two people using a taxi and splitting the cost might not be too much different than taking the much slower Airport Express bus.

Always have small bills to pay the taxi fare, taxi drivers and even some street vendors may not have change for a 500 baht note.

If you want any specific hotel reservation mention the price range you want.

Hello Mac:)

A taxi from the airport to the Khao San Rd should cost less than 500 Bahts.
Make sure u get one, from the taxi rank outside the airport. The ones inside are more expensive.

U could also take the tourist bus, for 150Bahts. This is a good option. The bus staff speak English, and will ask u where u are going, and let u know, when u are there.

To get to taxis or tourist bus, go downstairs, at the airport, and then go outside.

Guest House
Chada Guesthouse for 140 Bahts for a single room.
It will be on the other end of Khao San Road, from where the bus drops u. But not a long walk. The Khao San Road is only around 200 M long.

Clarife, whether the Khao San Rd is the best place to stay, depends on how much action u want. It is incredibly noisy, until around 2AM every night. Let me know if u would prefer a quieter place, but still economical and full of backpackers to meet, near the Khao San Road and i will give u details. ;) I would not bother to book, in advance. I have never not been able to find a place to stay. Also, the places on the internet cost more, than the ones where us just show up. Anyway, u just have to tell somebody on the street what u are willing to pay, and they will point u in the right direction.

Im hoping to pay around €3-4 for a room but id take a cheaper one if i could find one. There will be 4 of us making the trip so maybe a metered taxi would be best? I think we arrive at around 6.30 in the morning.
Also curious about the best place to get my visa for vietnam. Iv heard that you can get it in the vietnamese embassy in bangkok or let a guesthouse sort it out in cambodia. What would be the easiest and most reliable way?
Thanks.

Thanks Mel,
I have been looking on the internet at guesthouses and they seen so cheap at 500 baht - I just can't imagine them getting much cheaper! 2am doesn’t sound too bad to me but I suppose it would probably be handy to be close to the khao san road but far enough away to be able to relax if you want! Have you got a favourite place to stay in bangkok?
