clarife has indicated that this thread is about Thailand

Hi Guys,

We have finally booked our flights to SEA!!!

I know this question has been answered a million times, and I have been googling like a mad women but I keep getting contradicting answers.

I am a bit worried about the rainfall in the ithai slands between October & December. Some people have told me that you will barely the notice the rain & that it is almost welcome during a hot day but could anybody share their experiences of the islands during these months?

We will be visiting Cambodia and Vietnam also so if we had to leave the islands untill last it would be fine - but I really want some paradise sunshine while we are there!!!

So in short, when is the best time to do the islands (& which islands - east/west) from october through december?

Thanks a mill

C

In October you have to worry about high winds seas more than rain. Another thing is if you stay on an island rather than the mainland you have less chance of daytime showers. We have been on Phi Phi Island several times and can see it raining on Phuket and Krabi while we are in the sunshine. This has to do to the mountain effect of warm moist air rising to meet the cold air of the mountain tops, condensing into clouds and rain.

November and Dec, the winds have calmed down. You might get a short daytime shower but not for long. Many people say it rains less on Samui, which is true because it is a small island but the same can be said of Phi Phi and other islands in the Andaman Sea. For us the breathtaking beauty of the limestone rock formations, excellent sugar white sand beaches and numerous coral reefs of the Andaman Sea are far more appealing than the Gulf of Thailand.

Have fun,
Randy and Ning

Thanks a mill for the quick reply!

when you say You might get a short daytime shower but not for long how long would you be talking about, and would the sun go in, would the islands go dark, cloudy? Would sunbathing, diving and exploring still be an option around these months, and if so which month would you recommend visiting the andaman sea islands?

Thanks a mill again!

I was on the gulf coast islands last October (early October) and it was cloudy and rained most days for (roughly) between 1 and 4 hours, rarely longer. It was extremely humid though.

I was on Phi Phi & Lanta (Andaman side!) in December and January and the weather was gorgeous for one week but it did rain on Ko Lanta for 2 days solid.

Generally speaking, the weather should be dry in December on both sides, but October is a little risky incase the monsoon overruns.

Thanks Claire,

My uncle had said that when he was in thailand(in the rainy season) it rained torrential but only for a short time and the sun was straight back out again - but he was in central thailand so I didnt know if this were the same for the islands.. By the sounds of things late november and december seem safe enough but I suppose with the weather as it is these days I'll just have to get there and decide on the spot!

Thanks for the replies guys

October is a difficult month to predict the weather ( I should say more difficult than other times ), I agree that if you go to islands you then have a problem if the ferries don't operate. I would start with mainland and see how the weather goes once there.

Thanks Louissa,

We have decided to go up north first and then maybe Vietnam & Cambodia and leave the islands 'till last - maybe mid to late November & december. Do you think the weather would be nicer by then?

Thanks
