My favorite country in Southeast Asia is Vietnam. I found the people the friendliest in the regions (though many argue the opposite), the history the most interesting, and the scenery the most beautiful. What I liked most though was the diversity of the towns and sights compared to other countries. From Sapa, Halong Bay, Hoi An, and the Mekong, every stop is something completley different from the last, making it a great travel destination.
Thailand probably falls into second place but for completely different reasons. With the best beaches and the best food in the region, Thailand to me is the ideal vacation, whereas Vietnam is the ideal travel destinations.

is it safe enough with the wild animals??

This is quite possibly the oddest questions I've seen on this board. I guess if you have a phobia of spiders you may come across the odd one that will give you a fright, but the only wild animals that you are likely to see are monkeys and they'll stay out of your way if you stay out of theirs.

And I'll register a vote against Vietnam, for the simple reason that we found the people in the north to be quite volatile. We also disliked Hanoi, finding it dirty, loud, and far too many motorbikes.

That said though, I was under the weather at that stage, it was raining all the time, and we had our sights set on China, so I can understand why I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

The south was fantastic. Saigon was a gem of a place. Dalat is also beautiful, and the Easy Riders tour is well worth doing. Muine was just a beach resort, no more no less.

I preferred Laos to Vietnam. It was more laid back, the people were more friendly I think, Luang Prabang is really lovely, Vientenne likewise. Found the food in Laos better than that in Vietnam. Laos was more rewarding to travel through as the people were more honest in my experience, and the transport is very slow. Oh and Beer Lao is better than anything that comes out of Vietnam :)

But you will ask 1000 people their advice, and when you follow it you will experience something different anyway.

Re wild animals, don't remember seeing any (unless you count a few gap year yobs just out to get stoned and pissed) You can get by on 20-25 dollars a day easy.

This might sound like a silly question but are there not the kinds of creepy crawlies in thailand that you would find in Australia, iguana and the like (anything that can crawl on me is a no no! ) The smaller animals are the ones that really creep me out!

There are often very big cockroaches, in the guest house rooms and beach huts. They can be up to 2 inches long. If us want to ensure that u are not sharing a room with them, then spray your entire room with a bug spray, before u even put your stuff in there.

Yeah, as Opospa said there are house lizards. I dont think they will bother u. They usually stay on the wall. And they are a good natural way of getting rid of bugs, because they eat them.

Dont leave any food in your room, unless it is unopened, and/or in a secure container. Otherwise it will quickly attract an army of ants. Dont leave and open packet of cigarettes in your room either. They will bite holes in them.

Dont pet those unhealty cats, that are everywhere. They are often full of fleas.

There are also sand ants. They bite your feet, if u step on a place where they are. The best thing to do about them, is to put your feet in the sea right away, or run the shower over your feet. But dont worry too much, about them. I only got attacked twice by them, in my 3 weeks, on the islands.
