Thinking of going to Vietnam this July/ August. I know this is the rainy season in Asia but how bad is it in Vietnam. I have heard you can get away from the rain in the north. What are the islands like in Tonkin Bay? Also can anyone recommend some good beaches for that time of year.

Hey Sean,
I have not heard anything bad about Vietnam as far as safety is concerned.A girlfriend of mine went 5 years ago on her own, with no probs. The heat might be a problem if it's your first time to Asia. When are you arriving? Are you flying from the U.K.?

VN is quite safe by almost any standard. The gov't runs a pretty tight ship and do not tolerate confrontational crime against visitors. Of course there are thieves, just like every country. Make it difficult for them to ruin your holiday. Keep your valuables under your clothes in an undergarmet pouch while on the move. Use your hotel's lockbox or the front desk for your passport, air tickets, travel checks, etc. rather than your room.

Once your are in VN, check with the travel shops on what beach has the best weather. DaNang may be OK while Nha Trang & Mui Ne are wet. Or Phu Quoc may be fine while the rest of the country is getting rained on. Be flexible, that is always good advice while travelling.

Hi All!
Im flying into Thailand for a few weeks in early August but have to be in Vietnam (HCMC) by 17th August as I start volunteering with the christina noble childrens foundation there so will be leaving there for at least three months. I've heard its a great, fast, vibrant, exciting city but does have the highest rate of 'pickpocketing' in Vietnam but I guess if you are vigilant and careful things should be fine.

If anyone is over that way Mid-August to Mid-November, early December, give me a shout :) Happy travelling everyone....... by the way im going on my own and scared shitless!!!

Hey guys,
I'll be in Vietnam on my own (shitting it!) from the 8th July until the 25th July, travelling up the coast from HCMC to Hanoi. Keep me posted on where you lot will be and we might meet up for a drink or two!!

hi all,

let me reassure you...you have nothing to be worried about. i have lived in hanoi for nearly four years, and despite the odd sleazy male i have never felt threatened in any way. i have had one house break in during this time, but i figure that's pretty much a part of city life wherever you live in the world!

i am currently working for a local travel company, and would be happy to advise you on any aspect of your trip, or give assistance on tour bookings, visa etc.
