Hey guys,

I am travelling to Central America in september and am now looing into backpacks.
Can anyone recommend a good sturdy brand of backpack ?

Also does anyone know what vaccinations are required or advised for travel to central america? I will be visiting Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica & Panama - maybe Nicaragua.

Thanks guys.

I got my backpack in Tiso and it is 1st class. The brand is just the Tiso range. I will see if I can get the exact name for it later but it's every bit as good as the far more expensive one's from what I have seen so far.
Cost circa £65 a year ago.

Think it is 70 or 80 litre's.

Just go into shop and see what feels comfortable.

You should look in to the Mountain Designs range of backpacks particularly the ones labelled Odessy .. (.. equals the capacity of the backpack so it may be 55, 65, 75 or maybe some other number.

For vaccinations seek proper medical advice from a travel doctor where you live, because people on this site are in all probobility not medical practitioners so it'd be a risk to accept any advise on required vaccinations.

A travel nurse will be able to give you the specific vaccination requirements for each country you plan to visit, but a good start is the following:

    Hepatitus A & B
Typhoid (I'd recommend the pill route, it lasts 10 years, vs. the shot which only lasts 5)

Make sure all your normal shots are up to date (measles, mumps, rhubella (spelling?) etc.

Yellow fever may be on the list for C. America, I'm not sure.

To enter Panamá and Costa Rica is obligatory to have yellow fever vaccine.

You may need it if you want to live in the rain forest. But generally Yellow Fever is not necessary.

you dont need it,Sam Salmon is right.
I was several times in Panama, even down in Darien, nobody was ever asking for it.

malaria is also recommended, but not required. i recommend going to a travel clinic, they will tell you what you need to get, and administer the shots/give you prescriptions for pills (typhoid, malaria). once you know what kind of malaria meds you need, i recommend getting only enough to get started on the regiment before going down there, since it is quite easy and cheap to get the same medicine for the same quality at any farmacia once you are down there.

all that being said, i'd like to point out, as some people don't realize this, that some people travel without malaria meds since they are something like 60% effective and some people have worse side effects than others.

as far as packs go, i love my Lowe Alpine pack, it's a "cholatse"...but it's only 35 L which might be a bit small for such a trip. then again, if you're good at packing light and want to travel with less, packing that bag is an interesting challenge :) (or even easy for some...not me...)
