Hi there
The whole coastline is great for surfing, its roughly a 10hr drive between the two cities, so depending on how much time you have you could stop off at quite a few places. All towns will have a pub, good surf and a camping ground which is pretty much all you need

Newcastle is a hidden gem - if you stay near newcastle beach you'll be close to surf and the nightlife. There's a backpackers or two up the beach end of town. It's not a huge city like Sydney and not a small town where the only pub shuts at midnight. There's not many tourists there so you'd get lots of attention from the young lassies out on the town, and some good waves at one of the many beaches.

Good place to have one last relaxing surf before you hit the madness of Sydney (and the same goes for Central Coast which is halfway between newcastle and sydney). Have a good one!

Newcastle is a hole.

There are some good surf spots north of Newcastle though.
