Hello Bananaslug:)

When I was a student, there were interest free loans available, for students. Is the travel loan something like that? I would not get in debt, for travelling. It is a pain in the ass enough, when one gets in debt, by accident, without doing it on purpose. Is the loan interest free? If it is, and u really think it is worth getting into debt to travel, then an interest free loan is probably the best way. If u would have to pay interest, on the loan, I would say dont take out the loan, for travelling.

Are you doing a study abroad program or are you simply looking for money for travel? If you are doing a study abroad program, there are better options, and you should consult a financial aid officer (they can usually transfer money from federal/state aid into your new country, or you could get lower student loan options, from places like Sallie Mae or Loan to Learn). If you are not doing a study abroad program, your rates are probably going to be quite high wherever you look, and I would recommend (1) getting acquainted with loan terminology (see if you can look over packages with someone who really understands it) and (2) applying for several different loans and comparing what they give you before you make a decision. Good luck. :)
