I wouldn't miss Baños (Tungurahua), Cuenca and the Quilotoa circuit; many tourists like Otovalo, which I found much too touristy. Mitad del mundo (very near Quito) is quaint, but also nice. Vilcabamba reportedly is also very beautiful, but I haven't been there myself.

Plus, I heard good stories about the Ecuadorian coast. Difficult getting around, though.

Don't miss Guayaquil -- It's the largest city in Ecuador--
Also you can't miss Cuenca !

There's no accounting for taste; I hated Guayaquil, very dirty and poor. Cuenca is very nice, though.

the Malecon in Guayaquil is ok,but the rest, nothing to wright home about.
take a bus and go along the coast to Montanita,a small village for the surfers, next nice place is Puerto Lopez a small Harbour Village there you can go out for Whale(Humpback whales) watching, right now is the saison for this adventure.

Definitely worth visiting Baños, although it´s raining cats and dogs at the moment :).
the other place I really liked was Villcabamba all the way down south...really beautiful mountains and a laid back vibe. Tena for the jungle and white water rafting...although take lots of insect repellent, those buggers are vicious. And last but not least....if beach life and surfing are your thing, then Canoa is a less touristy alternative to Montañita.
Enjoy :)

Papallacta hot springs on the way to tena, just got back from a few days there. Very relaxing, and great food, best part was no car alarms, had forgotten what silence was like. Didn´t stop raining while we were there, but saves getting sunburnt when you´re in the pools!

Don't forget Mindo for bird watching, butterflies and cloud forest -not too far from Quito either.
