hi, we plan to be in kota kinabalu for four days because we have previous tickets which we prefer not to waste. but i need to have some idea from actual travellers or people who live there on what there is for us to do there. we are not backpackers nor mountain climbers but we just want to chill and have a good holiday. also we need some ideas on where to stay. we dont want anything expensive but we need a double room with an attached bathroom....
pls help.

Okay some of the major hotels are probably too expensive for you ie Tanjung Aru, Magellan, Nexus. You might want to price the Hyatt, Beverly or Promenade. They are not as expensive but mid range and would suit you and they are within the city area so you do not have to travel far. As far as doing things...depending on when you arrive there are the all day markets in KK city itself which is very heavily attended and well worth time. The museum is certainly fascinating. You could go to visit the Orang Utan monkeys at the special park at the Rasa Ria Hotel complex. I think they have closed down the train that ran out in the country which is a pity. There are markets out on a strip near the Tanjung Aru and very good and cheap food. There is pony racing on Saturday. Shopping in KK is excellent with 3-4 very big department stores complete with big food courts. You can also get a boat trip to a few islands and have a walk around with the other tourists. Very good place KK to just chill out and have a bit of a rest and some fun and food.

I'm in KK now and not into climbing moutains so been going to the beaches... the national park islands are really close (20 mins away) and good for snorkelling, diving, sunbathing... generally chilling out!

At Kota Kinabalu, we stayed at Shangri -La, a medium priced hotel. Around RM 100-120 . Why dont you visit the official web site of Tourism Malaysia, www.virtualtourism.gov.my. for a general view of what to do and see. You can also try www.cuti.com.my.

I enjoyed my stay by eating nice and cheap sea foods at KK. You might try to make a trip to the foot hills of Mt Kinabalu where there are some attractions, or make a trip to Karambunai resort for sight -seeing or the Sutera Harbour= nice beach views. Shopping is also a nice alternative at the various markets plus making trips to Kundasang, nice vegetable growing area- the rice variety is the nicest.

Hope you will enjoy your stay and dont let small, trivial matters to spoil your 'cooling off' time.

hi, its me again. we are back in the philippines. we live here by the way. and i must tell you that the hotel we stayed at, the hamlin lodge, is a great hotel. we paid usd28 for a double, with airconditioning and hot shower. we didnt expect such a friendly hotel ( mostly actually backpackers stay there), and the restaurant manager, who is a filipina, is so nice. so this is not an ad, but i would certainly recommend this hotel. its new by the way. anyway, we really enjoyed the food, and the trek to mount kinabalu. watched pirates of the carribean as well while in kk. i must say, 4 days weelm spent, and we got value for money. thanks for all your advise, and we did most of all of you suggested us to do. now if anyone needs help about the philippines in general, and manila or makati in particular, just send me an email.
thanks again
