Safety in Hostels and Hotels

Travel Forums Europe Safety in Hostels and Hotels

Hi all ! I dont mean to spook anyone, but I'm off to europe for about 6 weeks backpacking in Jun/July. I am very well travelled, and can look after myself, but I will be travelling alone, mainly staying in shared dorm room's etc. In an effort to educate myself and maybe help any others who read this forum, I was wondering if anyone has any hostel horror stories that you may have experienced or heard of, and/or any other things to watch out for? To give you some examples...I recently heard of a couple who had someone break into their hotel room when they were out, then called reception to tell them to they forgot the combination to the safe. When hotel staff came up to assist, they pretended to be in the shower, whilst they opened it up! Another one I heard was of ppl coming in late (normally after dark) into a dorm room, and then start going through your backpack and when you question them, they simply say 'oops sorry, I thought it was mine!'

I have stayed in well over 100 hostels throughout the world and apart from a few places that had very inhumane living conditions, I've had no horror experiences in hostels like you are mentioning. Of course you will hear the odd horror story here and there, but chances are you will never experience one if you take commonsense precautions. Most people who stay in hostels are in the same position as you probably are and are travelling relatively lightly and not got much stuff in the way of valuables. You could get hit by a car crossing the road tomorrow, but chances are you won't, the same sort of thing applies with hostels don't think of the possibilities of horror stories, think of the probabilities of having a fantastic stay and meeting many great people. You are most likely worrying for nothing as long as you take commonsense precautions ie putting a padlock on your bag (one small enough not to say "I am hiding something very valuable in here").

I've stayed in lots of hostels (and hotels), some manky, some noisy, but I've never had anything robbed yet - the vast majority of folk are honest. I guess it still pays to be reasonably careful though....
