I'm 21 and want to go travelling again, went to Oz on my own last year, need a new adventure! Is it safe to travel alone here? Did anyone find it lonely or too much for one person to cope with? Also what is the best time of year etc to go. Need some tips!
Thanks y'all. Manda x

Hi Manda,

Myself and a friend are going to Thailand for 3 weeks in June and were thinking about missing it out and going someone else because some people had said that its not safe, from the things i've read on here and alot of other sites I now feel that we'll be fine in Thailand. Even though u'll be there on your own im sure you'll meet alot of people out there that u can travel around with.

Not much info but hope it helps make up ur mind

I'd say it's quite safe, been here alone for 3 weeks, the only thing I'd say you have to worry about is someone trying to scam you or rip you off. But it's easy enough to meet people here anyway, there are way more tourists than I expected (in certain areas of course).

Matt

Very safe, provided you use the same common sense you would use anywhere.

I lived in Bangkok for several years; I never encountered any trouble whatsoever.

Who told you that Thailand wasn't safe? Obviously not anyone who has been there. I've never heard of anyone going to Thailand and feeling unsafe. If you use common sense then you will be as safe there as you will be at home, if not safer.
And as far as going alone goes, unless you are completely socially inapt, you will never spend a day without meeting and hanging out with fellow travellers.

Hey Degolasse, It was a discussion with a group of people and the older people were saying that girls shouldnt be travelling alone there, ur right, they have never been there and like I said we now know differently so will be enjoying our 3 weeks there very soon, can't wait!!

Thanks everyone. I have heard it was not safe for a girl to travel alone too which is why I had to ask. I know the score when it comes to travelling but Asia is very different to Oz. Just afraid it could be confusing I guess as the culture is so different. Has anyone got any tips as to which islands I should visit and whether I should go to either Puket or Bangkok or both?!

Bangkok is a city, and no doubt where you will fly into. While some people find Bangkok too noisy, busy, and dirty for their tastes, I think it's a great city with lots to offer. There are a few great sights to check out, most notably the Grand Palace. But probably more important to most travellers, its the transportation hub of the country and where you will need to start from to get to just about anywhere in the country. Therefore it is the ideal place to spend your first couple days organizing onward travel to the Islands or up North or wherever you want to go. Head to Koa San Road which is the backpacker ghetto of the city and where everything you need can be found.

As for the Islands, everyone has there own taste and every Island is a bit different. I've rarely heard good things about Phuket from 20-somethings who tend to find it too expensive and touristy for their tastes. I've never been so I can't really comment on it (hopefully others will), but I would say it probably won't be your first choice. Phi-Phi, just south of Phuket is one of the more popular Islands for backpackers and is quite possibly the most beautiful island on the planet. I would definetly recommend it. I would also recomend Krabi on the mainland which is just as nice as the Islands only much cheaper and quieter. Samui on the east coast is a very popular Island, probably as popular as Phuket, and as a result is becoming increasingly less popular with the younger crowds who find it too expensive and touristy. But right next door is the imfamous Koh Phangan which is the backpacker headquarters of the Islands. If you want to party and meet lots of people your own age, then this is where to head. Koh Tao, just to the north is my favorite Island. It tends to attract a younger crowds who go there for the excellent and cheap diving. Even if you aren't into diving, its a great place to kick back and relax on the beach. Ko Chang and Samet in the north are also good choices, though I've never been so cant comment. But I've only heard good things about them.
