I need some advice on where to go next please...
In Kota Kinabalu at the moment, my plan was to head to Indonesia from here, do Bali, Lombok and Java before flying home from Jakarta on 3rd July.
However, some friends want me to go to Myanmar with them for the first 2 weeks in June....
Do I go to Myanmar for 2 weeks then to Indonesia for the last 3 weeks
Ignore the Myanmar temptation and spend my last 5 weeks in Indonesia???
If anyone has been, PLEASE help me decide and I'll be eternally grateful!
I'd split it up. There are very diffferent types of things to see in both Myanmar and Indonesia. I am leaving in 48 hours and part of my trip is in Myanmar and part in Indonesia (Bali). I have already seen parts of Java. Personally, if I had to choose, I'd go with Myanmar. It sounds fascinating and much less touristed.
I've done Bali six times, Lombok three times and had trips through Sumbawa and Sumba.
I love Indonesia, but I agree with QCLisa's suggestion that you do both Indonesia and Myanmar.
Did 3 weeks in Myanmar back in March/April 2006 and it was one of the best trips I have ever done.
Dropped into Yangon, Inle Lake, Mandalay, Bagan and Ngapali Beach.
May/June may be getting into the wet season, but March and April is the dry hot season, and it sure was.
Took the express ferry from Mandalay down the Irrawaddy River to Bagan. Almost 11 hours, very hot on deck but the sights were pretty good and the experience was an absolute BUZZ!!!
Great restaurant at the top of the Sakura Tower (opposite the Trader Hotel) in Yangon which provides a superb 4 course lunch for 5 USD, and the views from the 20th floor of both the Yangon River and
Schwadagon are magnificent if the haze isn't too bad (have pic on profile).
Compared to Bali/Lombok, Myanmar is virtually unspoiled by commercialism, the people are very very friendly, accomodation food and transport is cheap and the sights are second to none (Bagan is awesome).
You can get back to Bali anytime in your future with ease.
Get to Myanmar while it still feels like SEA in the 1950's.
Pity about the bastard military dictatorship though, so try as much as possible to get your money going to private citizens and not to government businesses.
Myanmar is a great place to visit so I would do it while you have the chance. With the government as it is, you cannot count on it always being so open to visitors as it is now. That being said, the wet season has arrived a bit early this year due to some unusual weather patterns this year. It started raining on May 4th and we have had only one completely dry day since. It may break up and be o.k. in a week or so though. The best time to visit is October to February but that is not in your time frame for visiting. Myanmar is like no other southeast asian country and it is like stepping back in time to visit.
I would show you around but am off to africa next week and will not return to Yangon till August. Have a great trip.
I am so glad you've all said to go to Myanmar- I'm off to Bangkok to sort my visa tomorrow and flying to Yangon on the first. Looking forward to it sooo much!
Thanks for the tips guys
Looks like you've already made the decision, but let me throw in one more vote for Myanmar. You won't be disappointed.
