Ashley, you have lots of options... how long are you in the South Island for?

You could head to Wanaka/Queenstown, it's pretty stunning down there. You can get there by going through Arthurs Pass and down the West Coast, or by heading south from Chch down State Highway 1.

If you're after a city in particular, then Dunedin would be the only other choice down south.

You could travel up the coast from Christchurch to Kaikoura - quaint town on the coast where the hills come right down to the sea. You could pick up a whale watching tour, swim with dophlins or sea lions - if not you can still watch some of the seal lion colonys which are dotted along the coast!

Also grab some fish n chips here - delicious!

ChCh, Kaikora, Q-Town, Milford Sound, Central Otago (head to the wineries), Dunedin for some drinking, West Coast tours... the list is, honestly, endless. The SI is (although, being a northerner, it breaks my heart to say) the most beautiful place in NZ to visit.
