Hi Brian,

Check out the packing list in the Tools section (see left menu pane).
It's a list of things that you might need for your trip. Enjoy your trip! :)

Bring a clothes line with some sort of hooks on the end. That way you can do your own laundry in hotel sinks and hang them in your room. Not only will you save money, but you can pack less clothes because you'll always have clean clothes.

You can pick up a lot of things when you are in Thailand so don't worry if you think of something after you leave home.

A clothes line is handy, some other things you might consider are: needles and thread, safety pins, jackknife with screw driver/tools etc., favorite sun screen, band aids, scotch tape and calculator.

Don't forget if you plan on using a credit card or debit card - bring an extra card because ATMs sometimes eat credit cards or you may "lose" your only card. Photo copy the information page of your passport and place those copies in several locations. The photocopies (or a scanned page) will help you get a replacement passport if your passport comes up missing somehow.

You can bring a flash drive with you that has all of your favorite stuff on it. You can download portable Firefox onto a flash drive and duplicate what you have on your home computer. Just plug that into a computer in an internet shop and you have the same screen you have at home. I would leave a laptop at home because with a laptop you will always worry about dropping it, having it stolen, be afraid to leave it in a cheap hostel/hotel, etc. I have never seen a security/safety box that was large enough to hold a laptop anyway.

I also like to bring one of those little electric coil things that you can heat up a cup of water to make coffee, soup or tea. Bring a small plastic glass that you can use that coil and water in.

If you are a male and have big feet, like size 12, bring an extra pair of shoe/sneakers with you. Hard to find large size mens shoes in Asia without paying through the nose in a yuppie type store in a mall.

Lots of little things come up that you only think about after you leave home. I bring a small repair kit with me, tiny screw drivers for fixing eyeglasses, small pliers and some other stuff to fix things. I used to bring a small-plug in electric light (just a cord and scresocket for the bulb, was 40 baht in Thailand.) If you stay in cheap places the lighting often is pretty weak - I like to read! (Sometimes I just purchase a bulb with a higher wattage and use that for reading.)

You can use the internet to store travelers check serial numbers, flight itineraries, scanned copies of documents you may need later or copies of anything you need to recall in an emergency. You can save that information in an email to your self and then save it.

Have a throw-away email address with that does not come back to you directly. Often some strangers you meet ask for your email address, you can give them the one that does not give your name and real address away for safety. You can always read and write emails using that address just like a "real name" address if you want.

Always inform someone where your are going and with whom, especially if you are a female. If you are real young don't hang around with a lot of people doing dope or you will be grabbed up with them by the police. In Asia using dope (this is just a general caution) can put you in a prison a long time that really sucks for foreigners!

Have fun.

Not so sure about Irish sim card.
Well, just bring it and see. What model is your mobile? i think it should have no problem with the local sim card. I suggest you to buy Happy DTAC for your use in Thailand. It is much easier and cheaper. The starting pack is about 100baht-200baht. And you need not to register it. You can straight away use it after you purchase it.;)
