Hi chris,

I would say definitely don't go with a tour group in NZ and Oz as you will not have a problem meeting other people in hostels etc. I travelled on my own and met so many people as there are loads of other lone travellers; if anything most people i met were travelling alone. You should even be able to hook up with other people who are doing the same route as you and travel on with them; I did this in western australia for about 3 weeks. I never felt lonely during my travels, in fact the odd time i wanted to be on my own i had to make the effort to do so! travelling alone you have the best of both worlds - you're your own boss so you can decide exactly what to do when but can spend time with other travellers whenever you choose.

Don't be nervous - you'll have the time of your life. it was the best thing i ever did! :)

send me a personal message if you want any more info.

Agree with everything that bex76 has said to you already. You will meet loads of great people along the way if you stay at hostels and you also have nothing at all to worry about.

on the topic of meeting other lone travellers, how did you open up? I found it quite awkward just walking up to someone and .. 'talk'

I usually just started with the room mate that was closest just introducing myself and asking his/her name, where the person was from, how long have the been staying at the hostel etc. Just things designed to find out a little bit about them and what they have seen and usually that would get someone to leading to further conversation.

In normal situations at home I am not at all comfortable in approaching strangers, but being away, having the fear free attitude knowing that if you stuff up no one else is going to know about it (unlike is possible if you stuff up in the city you live in).
