I'm going to Paris for about ten days or so and I'm planning on getting a rail pass and going on a few daytrips. With that in mind I was wondering what everyone's favourite excursions from Paris are? So far I've just made a rudimentary list that consists of -
Now, some of these I know enough about to make an informed decision (I've already been to Versailles and Bayeux is a must visit) however are some of the rest of these poor choices? Any others which would be better? Many thanks in advance for any help.
it's quite an interesting town.
i made one day trips from paris to chartres and rouen and rouen was much more enjoyable.
chartres is all about the cathedral, and the cathedral is in pretty bad shape, unfortunately.
a big contrast compared to cathedral in amiens (also makes quite a good trip from paris), which is renovated, bright, very beautiful and very impressive.
From your list I've only seen Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Orleans, and I think Orleans is overrated.
It seems to be the furthest one too, so I'd skip that. I'll probably check Chartres next time I'm in Paris -- regardless of the state of restoration thereof.
(Eleritz, I do hope you are not serious about "renovation" of Mediaeval architecture, but rather mean "minimal restoration where necessary"?)
You can also make it to bits of Normandy and back in a day (leave early and get back late). I met some people who came up for the day just to visit the D-Day beaches.
Thanks for the advice. Orleans was one of the places I wasn't sure of, so I'll probably skip that and swap Chartres with Rouen.
