So im heading round the world for a year starting Jan 16th 2008, and after i hit NYC im heading over to California, flying into LAX but was looking @ basing myself in or around the area of Huntington Beach... but im slightly worried that living costs could escalate out of control, specialy it being in the OC...

so does anyone know if there are any cheap accomodation in that area, travel hostals would be perfect! .... im not very fussy, ive worked summer seasons in Ibiza, and if only you saw the living arrangements haha!!

an added bonus would be someone with a spair bed that could rent it for a few bucks a night

hope someone can help

Anyplace just slightly inland would be cheaper than on the beach in Huntington Beach.

I suggest you stay on one of the cheap hotels on Beach Boulevard (state highway 39) just a ways north near Knotts Berry Farm (Buena Park). From there you can take a bus, hitchhike, or rent a car to get to Huntington Beach in about an hour or less any day of the week.

Enjoy

great - thats very helpful ... would it be the same situation in say Malibu area?

also when u say cheaper - could you (if you know) give me an idea of some similar prices to expect in both locations? (per night would be ideal)

many thanks

Presuming you booked through a discounter like hotels.com or expedia.com or similar, you could probably get a nice room in in Buena Park for anywhere from $50 to $70, whereas right on the beach would run you from $95 to $200.

With the great pound to dollar exchange rate (from your perspective, that is--not ours), this would cost you 24 to 34 pounds to stay in Buena Park, versus 46 to 97 pounds to stay on the beach in Huntington Beach.

P.S. I met my wife in Huntington Beach and lived in the area for over 25 years so I know it well.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the area.

Enjoy

Oh, and as far as Malibu--there are no cheap places to stay close by. Malibu is where all the TV and movie stars live, so prices are extremely high in this area.

I suggest you go north to Ventura and stay at a hotel or hostel there. The beach is almost just as nice and prices will be at least 2/3rds cheaper than in Malibu.

Enjoy

yeah after lookign more into the OC area - i ust dont think its going to be possible (financially) to be based there ... Malibu as you stated is rather pricey due to ''hollywood''

ive decided that Venice Beach is a good option - rather central to the sights and sounds - im guessing it gets some good swell also (i like/try to surf) ;)

i done a search in the Accomodation section of this site and found this rather nice little budget travel hostel:

you happen to know much about it? .... it states only 5 miles from LAX airport .... sounds good and very nice price if i was to share a mixed dorm with 4 other people

cheers

Venice would be much cheaper to stay in, is a very intesting place, it's fairly safe compared to other cheap places in LA, and the surfing there is okay.

Here's a website you might be interested in. It gives up-to-date surf reports and has a web cam for various surfing locations, including Venice Beach:
