I'm starting my backpacking trip in Athens and i was wondering what is the cheapest way to get from Athens to Turkey.
im turkey, i would like to go to Cappadocıa, Pamakkale and Ephesus around the western coast hopefully ending in Istanbul then i would continue my travel to bulgaria.
i've been trying to do research online and there are many ferries that travel from different greek islands to diff parts of turkey. which route would be the cheapest and most convenient for my trip?
You can either move to Lesvos island by ship (departing from Peiraias port every day - need 10 hours approx.) stay there for a day, and then catch a small boat leaving from Mytilini port to Ayvalik (around 08:30 morning - but not every day yet). It takes 1 hour and the cost is nearly 30 Euros (both ways). Ayvalik is a nice option if you want to move to close areas, like Izmir or Ephesus - u can rent a car over there. Kappadokya is really far (u need 5 hours driving). Ayvalik to Istanbul takes about 7 hours driving but its a rather interesting route ! Dont miss Assos - a beautiful village by the shores, north of Ayvalik.
Another option is either Rhodes (but u need many hours from Peiraias to get there) and then the boat to Bodrum, or Samos (more or less like Lesvos option) and then the boat to Kusantasi.
To be honest, i did the 1st one many times in the past. And its really enjoyable if you can bear with many hours on boats. But u are on vacation right ?? So, you have time and u need relaxation ... try it ! U will enjoy the magic ..
