Hi all,
I plan to visit Thailand again :) in the November 07.
This time I want to pay attention to North. There is enough information about Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Golden Triangle and so on. Also I want visit "highland" people, but I don't want to visit "human zoo" villages, where people posing for photo all day long. I want to see real live of highlanders.
Does anyone suggest right direction? :)

p.s. I plan to rent a car, so long distances are not problem for me.

I would suggest Um Phang. It is very deserted and absolutely beautiful. We went on a three day trek and visited an amazing waterfall and styed overnight in a hilltribe. We were lucky because on that night there we waas a wedding so the village really came to life. Otherwise the people kept alot to themselves. But Um Phang was definitely the highlight of my trip. I wouldn't recommend driving yourself though - the road is quite dangerous.

RFritz, thanx a lot for your advise!
I will keep in mind road condition, but I think this will not be a problem for me, because I live in Russia, and Russian roads are really crazy :)

Ah Mr Gee,

tread very carefully my friend. Please do not confuse all people from gods country as highlanders, we are a very special rare breed, hospitable and fun loving unlike our lowland breatheren.

Hey, if I am living in Ural mountains, who I am - highlander or one of hilltribes ?

well, if you spend your time drinking, shouting incomprehensive words, eat battered Mars bars and sing Celtic chants you're a highlander. if you don't, you're part of a hilltribe.

Hi, your 3 day trek has caught my attention.
Can you tell me where this was and whether you did it indepedently or with a guide?
Thanks!

Hey Chell,
The three day trek is in Um Phang near the Burmese border. There is a bit of information in the Lonely Plant if you are using it. I just took a Sangthaweaw from Mae Sot. I think it took about 5 hours but is absolutetly stunning (make sure you sit at the back so you can stand up and see the scenery). The drive is a bit of an adventure as they pick up refugees along the way and they are often then stopped further along by the police. But all the same it is safe for foreigners. I just signed up with a trek when I was there - the town is so small and it is easy to negotiate prices - it is good if you have other people to go with because there are very few tourists in this area. I met two other foreigners on the drive and we just stuck together. The treak was really cheap (if i remember correctly only $60 AUS per person with everything included but the elephant ride - which i decided to take in the end because I got lazy). I would definitely recommend it - I never did any treaks in the usual places because I wanted something different and it was alot of fn - the waterfall is amazing and the hill tribe is interesting but even there they had a mock 7/11.

If you need any other info just send me a post.
Enjoy
