Im going travelling next week for a year and wondering what girls have done with regards to contraceptive pills?
I dont really want to be tied down to taking one everyday as i have a v bad memory and ive just read the side effects they can have including weight gain and im not too keen on that!
What altervatives are there and am i able to get them in oz? ie jabs

Not that l have any experience but l would think that the best place to start as regards you options would be to speak with your Family Planning Clinic FPC or your GP and they would advise the options open to you.

I think differing contraception is available to you depentent on your own personal health - blood pressure etc etc, yes you can get injections as l know a friend of mine used them but lm not sure how long they usually last for, theres also the implants, oral contraceptives, condoms, coil, dyaphram etc etc.

But l would say that even if you go with jabs or implants over the pill itself condoms are essential AS WELL.

As for side effects - the hormones included in contraception such as the pill, jabs, or implants could well include minor weight gain, hormonal imbalance/mood swings - l know it took me a while to find a pill was happy with. On the plus side it can help clear spotty skin - my sister was put on it by our GP to help with her skin!

But best advise is go see the experts they will have all the answers!

Good luck

*** bring/use condoms *** bring/use condoms *** bring/use condoms ***

Everything else is secondary, really; I think Purdy summed up pros and cons quite nicely.

One alternative is not to have sex ;)

Condoms are absolutly essential, as everyone says, but a lot of girls find the pill is also useful in addition to condoms.

For example, a lot of girls who have heavy periods, and bad pms and pains etc find being on the pill greatly eases problems with time of the month. This is a good thing when you are travelling, one less thing to worry about.

The pill is a back up to condoms, should there be an accident with a condom, at least you are less likely to get knocked up. Sure, you might get some nasty disease, but you are still (hopefully) protected from getting pregnant.

Everyone is different, however, and some people get loads of unpleasant side effects from the pill.

You should speak to your doctor and see what they think. They would be able to tell you more about the jabs etc and the likelihood of side effects etc. I think it would have been better to start taking the pill a good few weeks/months before your trip, so you know if it suits you or not.

but remember what Aunty Clara told you, "No condom no sex"

Guys, your all sex obssessed lol.
The pill isnt just for protection against sex, its for regulating your menstrual cycle which is important when im away travelling for a year. The good thing about a pill is i can keep taking it and not have a period which is handy when were swimming all day, on the other hand, what my original post was about, was the side effects.
Ive decided to keep taking my pill till i get out to Oz and am settled in a place. Then seek GP and arrange the jab out there as i really done have time now....leaving in ONE WEEK!! YERRRRRRRRRR!
Thanks for all your help anyways :D

I agree with Rob. Have plenty of sex at home before you start traveling, and make up for the loss as soon as you are back home again. In the meantime, just abstain from it. This can also prevent a lot of anxiety, mixed feelings etc.etc. which only distract you from your travel objectives. Being away from home for a long time, there's always the alternative of providing yourself the pleasure, right? So, Charlotte, not all males are that sex obsessed. At home yes, from time to time, but not that much while we're out there somewehere.

Amorphis - Just to clear up, when i used the word "guys" it was aimed at everyone on the post not just you lovely gents out there :)
Im not sure about the whole sex marathon before i go to Oz, i only have 6 days and a lot of organising to do, i really dont have time.
Thanks again for all your kind help ppl, have fun travelling....i will!
Charlotte ( non sex obsessed)

What a can of worms you've opened - dont you know that all TP members are all deviants when it comes to such matters!

No l think you are being VERY sensible and waying up your options!

Are you sure you dont have time even for a mini marathon - think of it as enjoyable exercise!

Have fun in Oz!

Yeah Charlotte I think that Purdy is right, u should definantly try and fit in a marathon before u go, if not a full one then go with the last suggestion and make it a mini one - do it quietly though, u don't want to go upsetting the neighbours ;)

Hope u have a trip of a lifetime

& remember - stay safe xx
