im doing a year there so any advice is appreciated! or let me know if your going around the same time!!
Australia is BIG - realy BIG and there are vast distances to cover. Stay away from the north in summer - too hot and wet. Stay away from the South in winter - too cold (unless you want to ski). Sydney is a lovely place if you stay close to the harbour, but a cesspit away from it. Canberra is full of interesting things - National Gallery, War Memorial, National Museum, Parliament House (marred by its inhabitants), but very expensive. Melbourne is nice - best for shopping.
Brisbane is the best city all round. Try to get out of the cities. There are lots of interesting things to see in country areas. Distances make air travel a must and fortunately we have good safe low cost carriers now (Jetstar & Virgin Blue). The trains are not much good. Start in Sydney in spring then see Tasmania and Victoria before going to northern New South Wales and Queensland. And if you like beer, we've got the best!
Soooo......... if you are going to start in Sydney then i gather you will be staying there for Christmas and New Years....?
Please be aware Sydney is a very expensive city so, unless you have a huge bank account, I would suggest you get out of it asap.
Are you going to work whilst you are here? If so what sort of work would you like to do? There is a good living to be had from fruit picking and you get to see many places you wouldn't get to see if you were just travelling. Have a look at these couple of site - many others to be found as well.
As you are arriving in our summer then my suggestion would be to go south straight away. Spend until approx April down south and then move to the northern parts after that until approx October. Every state has its wonderful parts - but Australia is HUGE!!
One suggestion would be to link up with other backpackers and share costs by travelling in a car - either your own or theirs. This way you have more flexibility in where you go and you can stop and start as you want.
And a plea from a West Aussie here - please do not forget our wonderful state! It is huge but worth the trip over.....
Good luck and have fun!
PS if you would like any extra info then you can drop me a line. I have run backpackers hostels in the past so have some experience in assisting with travel plans.
