My mates been telling me about a river in Northern Laos where you just float down slowly on a rubber ring only to be pulled in by a rope to riverside bars on your way down. You can either have your drink on the riverside at the bar still sitting in this ring or float down with it.

This can't be true...or is it?

It's true-
Vang Vieng - between Vientiane and Luang Prabang-- It is the "party" spot in Laos but also has some great caves, good trails for biking, good kayaking, and the "tubing" you described. Tons of western tourists and the associated parties, drugs etc...
People seem to love it or hate it....

yes its true! I did it last year and it's great fun and the scenery as you float down the river is stunning. It can take several hours from start to finish, depending on how many beers you stop for on the way!

It is no lie. It's a pretty great place to relax for a few days. Things must have changed in the last few years since I was there because I never would have decribed it as the "party" place. It was very quiet when I was there.

Yeah Dave - it's changed from what I hear it used to be.... If you stay on the couple main streets you will hear the music from the discos late into the night... Plus the ubiqutous restuartants where people lay around watching Friends or movies on DVD That kind of thing may not for everyone but I agree it is a cool place to hang out for a couple days.

I was wondering about this - what if you decide you want to get out of the water but are nowere near a bar?? Are there a lot of bars along the banks, and can you go of course?

Nope, you just cruise further down into the sea, never to be seen again
