I love flying so I think I would choose that. Although it does depend on the distance as well I suppose. travelling through amazing scenery on a train is great but also the convenience of flying is great too. They are 2 completely different things and very hard to compare. Flying in europe is also cheaper than taking the train.
By the way, all the stuff about being environmentally friendly by not using the plane is a bit out of proportion. in fact planes around the world are only the cause of 2.7% of carbon emmissions. It's mainly Industry and cars that are the main problem, so taking a train and hiring a car when you get there is not very environmentally friendly!! But that is a discussion for a completely different thread!!

i like both.... trains you get to see more of the coutnry, planes are faster...

for me its normally about the price. if i can fly cheaper than i can train it, ill fly.

however i just found a site wher eyou can get really cheap bus tickets... bus is the least comfy, longest way, but if youre keen on saving, then the bus can be a really good option! www.eurolines.com you can get minipasses for 3 or 4 cities from 66 euros or something, and the good thing is, alot of them go overnight, so youve got your roof over your head AND transport sorted, which for a tightarse (or just poor :P) like me, thats a big phat bonus!!

i think the train is the most interesting tho...

As previously stated, trains are best, but i'd suggest only for the shorter journeys (upto around 6 hours during the day). overnights can be rough on a train, specially if you cross borders as you'll get woken up for passport checks in some countries. plus think of it this way, for a flight, you've got to get to the airport, get there early, check in, fly, get luggage, get out of the airport to the city, which can end up taking 4 or 5 hours for a 2 hour flight.

I have heard that the train ride up through Scotland is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely hoping to do that one...
