Will you have access to a car? You can do fine in the cities without one, but public transportation to less populated areas leaves a lot to be desired. It is easy to travel along the Washington DC-Philadelphia-NYC-Boston corridor, though.

How much time were you planning on spending in the city (NYC, that is)?

you can drive to california and back in 6 days with minimal stopping. with 15 days think of all the possibilities.

I can recommend the Amtrak as an easy way to go Downtown NY to Downtown Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia at least. All journeys take no longer than 4 hours door to door and are fairly regular and, in my admittedly limited experience, reliable. Plus the costs are comparable with flying (considering airport transfers and other stuff).

Hey SFZMarkII,
Your iterinary looks good for the most part but I think it really would be nice if you gave yourself an additional day for Montreal/Quebec. Just a suggestion.

Any reason you are spending 4 days in Ithaca-Syracuse-Albany, NY? Family? If not, then I would give them a pass and divide my time else where. Maybe consider DC. Easy and cheap to get here via NYC Chinatown bus, $35/rt.

I agree with S_Paradise, unless you have family, friends, or another major reason to go to Ithica, syracuse, and albany I would skip it. If you are up in that are maybe check out Lake Placid for a day or two. Great hiking and a ton of other other outdoor activities.. It is part of the adirondack park, which is the largest state park in the united states. Worth a visit.

I would definitely try to hit D.C. if you can. There is a ton to do there and a good amount of it is free, including all of the Smithsonian Museums and most of the Memorials. If you go definitely hit the FDR Memorial - it's a little out of the way (you can still walk to it though), but truly worth the time. Also, if you have the money I'd check out the International Spy Museum - it's a little pricey, but very interesting. Be sure to give yourself at least two hours there.
