I dont have any official study, to show where people go, but there are a lot of foreigners where I live, and they seem to go to their countires of origin, for vacation. I live in Germany.

Germans tend to spent their summer holidays around the med. From Canary Islands, Morocco, Tunisia to Egypt and Turkey to Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, Malta, France and Spain. I would say about 50 % or more of those people who go abroad hit one of these destinations. The rest distribute themselves around the rest of Europe and further destinations, like USA, Kenya, South Africa, China, Thailand, etc.

Germans are called "Reiseweltmeister", ie world champions in travelling. A recent survey had shown that most Germans would sell their car to finance their annual holiday trip. That combined with the fact that the large majority of Germans go abroad for holidays shows that the title is deserved.

Australia is far from anywhere so most seem to stay in the country.... or geta cheap deal to Bali or pacific Islands but it aint as cheap as hopping on a plane from London to the Costa Del Crap

I agree with the poster that stated most Americans travel the US first, (It is rather a large country, y'know), followed by Canada and Mexico simply due to proximity.

I believe I read that some of the other popular destinations heading the list for American's are the UK, Ireland and Italy, (which when you consider all the immigrants from those places to the US, it rather makes sense.) Followed by France, Germany and a spattering of Western and Eastern European countries.

(I tell you one thing, if I were living in the UK, I'd be visiting the US simply because the British pound is literally "pounding" the US dollar! Lots of Brits, (and those lil' Celtic Tigers, the Irish), buying up Manhattan right now as it's considered a "value" compared to London or Dublin. But I digress....)

I'm not actually surprise that Thailand is on number 3 spot. Whenever I go to Thailand I always encounter a bulk of foreigners like me there. I guess most tourist in Thailand love the country because of the food, temples and other attractions. I'm also surprise that Japan is not on the top 5 of the list since Japan is also a must visit place to go to.

limdrew37, the initial post is eight years old and is from the Canadian Government and so reflects the travel destinations of Canadians eight years ago. It makes no difference whether or not you always encounter a bulk of foreigners like you in Thailand unless you're from Canada (and your profile picture suggests you're a famous singer/actor from China or the Philippines or somewhere like that) and you were in Thailand eight or so years ago.
