Hi,

I would be going with my family to Cairns for 3 days and I wanted to ask which would be best place for stay and sightseeing.

I thought about the Green Island but there seems to be only one resort there and it is quite expensive.

Would there any other choices since we're only spending a few days.

thank you

Do you want to stay on an island?
Otherwise, try staying in Port Douglas, it's much more quiet than Cairns but has a lot of opportunities for staying the night. And it's good value as well.
I really like Hibiscus Gardens over there, which has family units as well.
And there are lots of tours to the reef as well with good operators.
Port Douglas is about 50 minutes north of Cairns by the way.

thanks for your help, Utrecht

I thought staying on the island would be better if I am interested in like snorkelling.

Is Cairns a good place to stay compare to Port Douglas??
What is there to do at night?

Actually, snorkelling is much nicer on a tour to the reef than directly on the shores of an island.
Don't know about Cairns, but it is much bigger than Port Douglas with more opportunities to go out, party etc.
But Port Douglas has very good (and affordable) restaurants and also some pubs to stay out late.

There are islands with great snorkeling off the beach, but further south is better for that (whitsundays). Port douglas is more of a romantic get away place to stay, I found things slightly more expensive than cairns, but it is nice, lots of big resorts there.

Both have advantages from a tourism point of view, but with a family i would recommend cairns, more for the kids to do there. Eg day trip up to kuranda to see butterfly sanctuary, play with kangaroos and koalas, see snakes and scorpions at the venom zoo. If they are a little older, scuba diving, snorkling, waterskiing, shopping, swim in the lagoon, skydive... And still lots for you to do.

Actually, Port Douglas is known for having just a few resorts and mostly boutique style small places to stay and appartments.

well when i was there on the main road leading into the town from cairns there was quiet a few big places, and more being built. Maybe they hid them.

there are lots of hotels/motels in cairns. some a bit further out of town, but town is easy to get too. dont worry you'll find something :)
