Hi, I've decided I am going to go on a back packers budget to Fiji sometime next year in 2008. I've done loads of research on Fiji and have decided that I am going to go to the Yawasa Islands, I plan on getting a Bula pass, so I can hope between islands when I want.
I was looking into later Feb/March or maybe April/May? Also I wanted to know what was the best way to go about planning my trip.... should I book ahead to the hostels/resorts? Or should I wait till I get there and just "wing it" booking as I go? I'm kind of nervous but yet excited about this trip, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hey there, I've not been to Fiji yet but heading off on my travels in October so will be going to Fiji at some point.
I've done some research about Fiji and I would recommend like most places, to book somewhere now for the first couple of days. At least for piece of mind that when you get there you don't have to worry about finding anywhere. You can check the place out a bit and see where else you fancy then.
Hope that helps
I would recommend at least booking for the first night that you arrive in Nadi. If you were coming from the US as I was, you will arrive close to 11 pm. There will be a travel agent open at the airport that can help you find a place if need be. I don't think you will have much trouble booking on short notice when there if your plans change for destinations.
It is highly worth renting a 4wd and spending a day or two driving through the Nausori highlands east of Nadi on Viti Levu.
Thanks! I appreciate your advice!
I was thinking about making reservations for the first couple of days somewhere, but I wasn't sure how booked things were.
I went to Fiji on Feb the 1st, did not book the islands until we got there. We had the same packages as you, but we also got the Bula welcome pack, which will get you a lift from the airport to your first nights accommodation (also accommodation included). When you do get off the plane, after you go through customs there a Fiji experience office, you can go in there to sort out your island hoping and i would recommend booking another night on the main land for the night before you leave Fiji.
You dont have to book any islands yet, you can even book them on the boat, after you get to your first island, you can book the next island there or just jump back on the boat. Easy!!!
If you need any more info on Fiji, let me know.
Have fun there, im sure you will, Fiji time!!!! - you will hear plenty of that.
