A whole bunch of stupid newbie questions - I'm a bit of a neophyte on the travel circuit so sorry if these questions seem a tad basic.
I intend travelling from Berlin to Leipzig over the weekend - is there anyplace in Berlin that I can leave my luggage for a couple of days safe, preferably locked?
I'm wondering if Amsterdam has a similar arrangement.
Could you reccomend some cheap clean hostels in Berlin and Amsterdam where I'll be spending the bulk of my little vacation?
Also what hostel would you reccomend in Paris if I'm to catch a really early morning flight from Paris Orly
There are plenty of hostels in Amsterdam, but I would book in advance as they get very busy, especially at the weekends. Try www.winston.nl www.bulldog.nl www.flyingpig.nl
these 3 are probably the most well known and the best, but there are many more like the Meeting Point and De wiite Tulp. Many of them are based on Warmoesstraat in the Red Light District (do not be scared of the red light district, it is very safe and full of backpackers and families) so they are very central to everything in amsterdam.
As you are a newbie to this sort of thing I would probably suggest you try the Bulldog first as it is more like a hotel, very clean, very central, very helpful staff etc and it wont scare you off visiting hostels again!!!
you can leave things in the train station at centraal in amsterdam, but you cant pay cash
you need a dutch pin card or a credit card... so if you were caught out like iw as (i left my credit card at home to avoid me shopping with it for the day!) then you have to lug your shit around! however if youre staying at a place like the bulldog, you should have lockers there, which coul dbe free, so you wont have to worry about paying, or walking off somewhere else to get your things.
For Berlin you could try CIRCUS hostel, have stayed there a couple of times myself and is a very good place to stay in Berlin, for Amsterdam i stayed at the hotel Groenendael was a few years ago now though so not sure about the price of rooms, sorry never stayed in Paris, can't help you there cheers hope its of some use to you
Thanks so much for all the info, guys. The bulldog appears to be all booked out so I guess I'll try the station.
