Hi all, just joined, probably first question of many!!!
Because of my age (currently 32) I cannot get a working holiday visa?
Is there still much work available ;) for backpackers without it?
Cheers for any help
Paul

You poor old bugger! Ok I am not sure when you are coming to Oz but my advice would be to delay it and try and get here about September and head North to Darwin. This is mango picking time and they always need people to do this work. It is hot and you will get a suntan alright but it pays very well and I am certain not having a visa is not a concern. As long as you are not in the country illegally there is nothing to stop you doing this sort of casual work where they sign on people who want to do all sorts of different time frames. Might be worth putting ""Fruit picking in Australia'' in Google and see what you come up with by I am from Darwin originally and know that situation. Trust this helps:)

Excellent news, Thanks for the prompt reply Buckra, glad to hear there is still work available for someone as old as me

Regarding New Zealand, there is a similar visa to the working holiday visa for British people - but as far as I'm aware only through the organisation BUNAC. You can be 18-35 to get this visa, and it would last 1 year.

Their "Work New Zealand" option has 2 visa options - the normal working holidaymaker visa, or the one above.

Note that Buckra's suggestion of working without a working visa is illegal, and that if Australian immigration finds out, you'll be deported and won't be allowed back in the country for a long time. (And they do actively look.)

Since you're lucky enough to be from the UK and have access to that "up to 35 years" work exchange visa for New Zealand, I'd highly recommend going for that. (Meanwhile I'm crossing my fingers for that scheme to be extended to the Netherlands before I reach 35.) :)

no visa = not allowed to work, out doubt any decent employer is going to allow you to work for them considering they take such a huge risk! if caught they will be heavly fined and there business gone down the tube.

and why would these employers take the risk when they are already paying you buttons...

you will get deported, fined, and banned from australia...go to america and this is a good enough reason for them not to let you in because they will asses your passport and see that you are risk to there country too!

Recently on a local TV show it showed that it has a large illegal working population in a lot of places, but they were basically only looking for Asians because the site that the jobs were mentioned on was in Korean language. So it would seem that a lot of jobs exist for illegal workers, but like Sander said it would be illegal so if you were caught you'd be in trouble and you'd also be getting really bad pay.
