Ok it may be long post..but any help would be great

I am Indian citizen but I have a US Greencard. I been living in US for past 7 years. But I still hold Passport from India. This means when i travel to Europe, I have to get a visa first.

Anyway next year (in May or June) i am planning to go to Italy for about couple of months with my friend. She thinks while we are there it will be good idea to also go to closeby countries for few days (such as Austria, Czech etc) but since she is american citizen she can enter those countries without visa. But i will need to apply for different visas. Which seems like pain in the a$$. for expamle if we leave Italy and go to Czech and come back to italy..i will need double entry visa. AND if i leave italy again and go to, lets say Germany or Swiss and come back to Italy..i will need triple entry visa to italy + visas for Czech, Austria etc. TOO much work

so i am thinking to just go ahead and apply for US citizenship. First i did not wanna apply for US citizenship because i did not want to loose my Indian citizenship. But Since i am a travel lover and will be travelling a lot in future...keep applying for visas will be pain and expensive.

Now i have one problem. I have NO idea how to start with applying to citizenship. I dont know anybody who has applied for citizenship before with Greencard. How do i start? what is the first thing i need to do? Is there any application I can get from online and send it somewhere? BTW..i live in Birmingham,Alabama. Do i get the citizenship application from Atlanta?

How do start all this? Any wesite that can help me?

plz guys ..any help would be great. Anybody who here has applied for citizenship ..plz share your experience.

Thanks guys

Rani

Hi Rani!

If you are seriously considering becoming a US citizen, then the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website will be quite helpful. On the righthand sie of the page are links to additional information, such as a guide to naturalization, naturalization requirements, applications and sample tests (similar to the ones required for citizenship).

Also check out the USCIS Service and Office Locator page. Local offices handle certain parts of the application process and the interviews your will need to undergo at some point. You can find an office near you by using the search function toward the bottom of this page.

I hope this information is helpful to you and good luck with your application!

One thing to consider: if you ever wanted to travel to Iran (which I highly recommend doing, it is a gogeous country) it would be smart to do this on your Indian passport.

For travelling in Europe on an Indian passport you should also inform yourself on the Schengen regulations - ie once you have a visa for Italy you do not need a visa for Germany, Austria and the other full-member Schengen states. Italy will issue you a visa which is valid for all full-member Schengen states. Czech R, Switzerland, Poland and many other eastern European countries are slated to become full-member Schengen states soon, btw.

Note also that with a US Greencard Schengen visa are a piece of cake - all you need to do is show proof of funds and accomodation. You don't have to jump through all the more usual hoops of invitation letter, criminal record check, etc at all!
