Hi

I arrive in Bangkok on September 18th this year. I plan to spend a few days there before heading to Chiang Mai by train.

Any recomendations on how my time would be best spent?

Will also be heading to Vietnam and Cambodia, is it better to organise the multi entry visa now, or is it easy enough get one while in Thailand.

Any info would be much appreciated.

It is also my first RTW trip so should anyone be planning
a similar route around the same time, would be up for having a beer or 2, with fellow travellers!

Wait until you are in Thailand before you organise you Vietnam visa, because you will need to be specific on entry date...because you can only be in the country for 3 weeks exactly. So whatever the leaving date on the visa is YOU WILL HAVE TO LEAVE!

I travelled up to Chiang Mai and stayed in this region for 3 weeks, to explore properly and wait for the visa to arrive. You can be unspecific with Cambodian visa (but its best to arrange it in Thailand), and get the Laos one when you travel into the country.

I went from Chiang Khong in nth Thailand over into Laos by boat, and bought the visa from immigration then.

If you get the opportunity, go on the slow boat down the Mekong, its an experience you wont ever forget. Its a brilliant way to meet other backpackers, and get photographs of the Laotian people and landscapes. (dont buy your accommodation for Pak Beng before you get there, you'll get ripped off, they show you a beautiful picture and then you stay in a hovel with rats in your bedroom) :)
