Well whatever it is it's pretty nasty. I certainly wouldn't describe it as tomato soup.

What comes from the Guinness Brewery smells exactly like coffee beans roasting. It smells the same, in Bewleys on Grafton St.(a big cafe, in Dublin, for anybody who does not know Dublin), when they are roasting the coffee beans.
My area in Dublin just would not be the same, without that smell.

Whiskey distilleries definitely do not smell the way breweries smell. Though, the smell at the Bushmills Distillery wasn't objectionable (and I rather liked the smell), it wasn't the nice malty scent of beer being made. I love walking into the brewery where Kris works because it does, indeed, smell like tomato soup and saltine crackers on brewing days. Even when they aren't brewing, after 162 years of production, even the stone/brick walls give off that smell. (Maybe I'm just partial to tomato soup and saltine carackers.)

Quoting beerman

Uh, guys....I hate to point this out, but they don't use hops in whiskey making......:(

And mostly what anyone would smell coming out of a brewery is a malt aroma....though I have heard it described as a "tomato soup and crackers" smell.

No need to get all technical on us now.....

If beerman is going to get technical, he could at least post the complete instructions, about how to make beer and whiskey.;)

whoops maybe i should start drinking guinness but i just can`t , its so heavy....ughhhhh.....the fall in guinness sales could be down to some of the old man pubs closing down, less customers because of the prices.....

as 14 euros for a pint.....well one of you got a second pint ( my one) so technically i paid 14 to look at a world map and a little souvenir bit of guinness which my sister took... ;)
