I'm going on a trip to Australia and, unfortunately, my time is short. So, I'll be in Sydney fliying somewhere north, and I still don't know which one is better (in terms of landscape and things to do/see). I must also consider that I'm going during the winter...
Could somebody help me????
concerning Fraser Island and Whitsunday Islands it really depends what you are looking for. Fraser Isl. is known for self-drive 4x4 camping tours which can be a lot of fun if you are into that sort of stuff. Best place to book one of those tours is either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.
I also loved sailing around the Whitsunday Islands and for a little more money you can even go diving during your 2-/3-day trip. The time on the boat was great and Whitehaven beach is absolutely stunning! Tough decision, maybe you can squeeze in both if you really want to.
Do you think it's possible to dive or enjoy the beaches of Whitsundays even in winter time??
And are the beaches in Fraser Island also stunning?
Get a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast is the airport name on Jetstar's site). If you book well in advance the flights are cheap. It is very scenic up there with 74 islands for you to visit some of which you can stay on, but if you are travelling on a budget your options are limited as the hotels etc on the islands that have them are very expensive back at Airlie Beach they have a few budget options. A lot of people take day trips to the islands and avoid the obscene expenses. With that region having about 300 days of Sunshine a year, unless you are very unlucky you are likely to be able to go diving and spend time on the beach, but it just wont be quite as hot as if you came in the middle of summer. Beaches on Fraser Island are nice (some are even driving beaches), but the beaches on islands like Daydream Island, Hamilton Island etc are nicer for relaxing on. Most the islands are mainly just really nice for relaxing, doing some water sports without doing much else. From Airlie beach you can do day trips in a hire car to some really nice areas if you are more in to the scenery and nature side of things. Glass bottom boat rides are available as are day tours out on the reef (a bit on the pricey side). You'll have a wicked time no matter which area you decide on.
