We are going on a world trip in Jan / Feb 05 to Singapore, Bali, Perth, Brisbane, Fiji, Hawaii & LA and are looking for cheap places to stay. As we are a couple are hostels an option? What about camping? Even sleeping at airports!!
Any advice re any of the countries above would be very much appreciated.
Hostels are always an option if you are after cheap I have stayed at many a hostel with couples in the dorm room (the beds are all single beds though so you'll be sleeping apart or very squished). Alternatively, quite a few hostels also have double rooms which you could inquire about. They don't always have a private bathroom (in fact usually don't...) but might be preferable to a ten person dorm every now and then.
For sleeping in airports, check out www.sleepinginairports.com. You won't find a more complete resource than that!
In cities camping is generally a much more tricky option... obviously.
Hope that helps,
I can recommend a definite MUST for Fiji - and that is to stay in the local villages through homestays...
My friends went there not that long ago and had a fantastic time, it is such a beautiful place and the people are so friendly. It is probably close to the cheapest option for staying in Fiji, but you don't have to stay in packed dorms full of backpackers, or share beautiful spots with loads of other tourists - some of the villages only take six guests at any one time, but sometimes you can have the whole place to yourself --
if you end up sleeping in airports you'll definitely need a good rest - there is heaps of info at www.fijibure.com. If you end up staying in a hotel you can still read all about fiji including bus info (local buses are a must if you're on a low budget), weather, what to take, etc etc on the same website...but you probably won't get the 'real fiji' experience...
as for australia, i would recommend camping as one of the cheapest options - if you're staying longer you could consider buying or even renting a 2nd hand van and travelling in that, or doing WWOOFING (willing workers on organic farms) to get the real feel for the place!
have a beautiful time!
Can I just warn that hotels (not hostels) are very expensive in Hawaii! Even the cheap ones.
We left it late to book anything and had to take a room at £75 a night - for a week!
There were cheaper, but they were rough.
So do some research before you get there. I imagine hostels will be your best option, or camping somewhere just outside the city.
Tip: all bus journeys are only $1, no matter where to. So staying just outside town shouldn't be a problem getting in and out.
I think you don't need to worry for singapore and Bali. Plenty hotels are super affordable, even hostel rates are not much different with budget hotels.
