Who flies internally within Vietnam and can anyone recommend a website to check out the flight prices?

Hi Heather,
we flew Vietnam Airlines back in 2001? and they were really good.
No more Russian lead-ballons but British-made aircraft (does that make you feel any safer).
Cause of the length of the country we found it much much much quicker than bus or train.
A 1-2 hour flight compared to 10-12 hours bus or train was worth the money.
We flew Saigon - Nha Trang, Nha Trang to Danang, Hue to Hanoi.
Not too sure about websites, but our travel agent got us pretty good prices for the internal flights.
I recall the aircraft were virtually sold out (lots of Tommy tourists and Vietnam vets) so trying to book once in Vietnam may be a bit difficult.
Hope that helps.

I flew twice with Vietnam airlines. the first time we booked though an agent in Luang Prabang (for our flight to Hanoi from Vientiane) and the second time, our hotel in Hoi An phoned up for us and booked our flights over the phone. I don't know of any websites where you can check the prices but we paid $100 from Vientiane to hanoi and $40 from Danang to Nha Trang. We managed to book the day before for the Danang flight; this was in May so it may be harder in high season. Hope this helps.

mmmm - the prices l am getting (via ebookers) return from Hanoi to Da Nang with Vietnam Airlines are £140 each - not what l would call cheap! Though l cant see how you can book online via the Vietnam Airlines site - it gives guidelines but when you hit eticket it starts going on about contacting agents!

Do you think we should wait until we reach there and hope for the best (worst case we grab an overnight train) or just take the hit and book? We dont have LOTS of time in Vietnam so l would prefer to fly so not to waste time!

God - this morning we were only going to Thailand - NOW - 12 hours and 2 travel guides purchased later we are doing 10 days in Thailand and 10 days in Vietnam - not enough to time to see lots BUT it does give a taster!

Cheers for your help

Hi Heather,
I think unless you are going in high season or over a Vietnamese holiday you should wait until you get there because I didn't have a problem with availability, even when booking the day before. I reckon the price you got on ebookers is way more than you would pay locally.

I agree with Bex, it is better to wait until you get there. You're also right you cannot book Vietnam Airline flights through the internet, but in my experience it was worth going to their office in Hanoi and booking a flight there. I also flew from Danang to Saigon with Pacific Airlines. That was fine too and you can easily book online.
Hope that helps,

Thanks Steff & Bex - invaluable help - our trip has changed again - l think we are going to drop Thailand (which is a pity but we only have 20 days) and go to Vietnam only!

Still lve been to Thailand before not Vietnam though!

I think you've done the right thing - Vietnam is fantastic! and 20 days is a good amount of time to spend there. I would recommend getting the sleeper train between hanoi and hue if you are going to be up that way- there is not much to see over this stretch and the train is a nice way to do it.
let me know if you need any more tips.
