I've booked on a backpacking tour, travelling around Guatemala and Belize next month and now I'm a bit apprehensive as I've read road travel isn't particularly safe in these countries with tourists being mugged by gangs.
Does anyone have any advice to share? What was your travelling experience like in these countries?
All advice is appreciated!
Although there is a chance of being robbed in Guatemala, chances are very small in Belize and road patrols by police are more frequent these days. As a general rule, try not to travel at night, and chances of being robbed are being reduced significantly. Otherwise, try to fit in the occasional flight, but only if risks are big and you feel better yourself, otherwise there is no need to panic.
I just got home 2 weeks ago from 2 months in Central America. The last few weeks of my trip was spent in Guatemala and Belize. I too was a little nervous after hearing about buses being robbed, or people being mugged. But after going to both countries my worries soon went away. Never once did I feel unsafe, in either country. I took many buses through these two countries, and I never felt uncomfortable. People that I encountered on the busses were nice, and helpful. I was on a bus that got pulled over by the police. They made us all get off, and just did a random inspection of the bus, then let us all back on. Stick to riding buses during the day, and not at night. Guatemala and Belize were two of my favourite countries in Central America, and I definitely think they are not to be missed! Have a good trip!
Thanks for your replies guys...made me feel much better!
All I've heard is positives from posts I've put on other forums too...so fingers crossed!
