Burchill has indicated that this thread is about USA

hi,
im planning on travelling to the u.s. when i finish my apprenticeship. basically me and 3 of my mates are gonna buy a car and travel around for up to 5 months on our own terms, seeing as much as possible.

we intend on a round trip starting in new york. we will be staying in hostels to keep costs down. but i do have a few questions:-

1. how long before i plan to arrive in the US should i apply for my visa.

2. One of the requirements for a visa is to have enough funds to cover your trip. how much are we talking about roughly? also do i have to have this money when i arrive in the US or when i apply for my visa.

thanks in advance

Visa wait times can be found here: Travel.State.Gov. Assuming you are a UK citizen going to London and getting a tourist visa (B2), it appears the current wait time is 4 days.

For showing the funds, I am not sure what they will ask for, but they will probably want to see at the time you are applying for the visa. For other countries I know a credit card is generally enough proof that you can support yourself in their country, but I've never applied for a US tourism visa before...

This would be easier if you just cut your time in the USA back to less than 90 days, then you could come to the USA under the Visa Waiver Program, and not worry about getting a visa. You could spend some time tooling around Canada or Mexico, both of which don't require visas for tourist stays either...

Hello,
So my mother works with International Students and she says it's been taking upwards of 4 months for Visas right now. As to how much you'd need for the trip it depends - are you planning on camping, trying to find hostels, or staying in hotels. Also, how much are you planning to travel around? Gas is fairly expensive these days and travelling around the U.S. you can use a lot of it. Hope this helps you out.
