like many others im planning to go on a round the world trip lasting for roughly a year. im too addicted to travelling not to, i think i owe it to myself!. i plan on inter railing it through europe for a month and then go to india nepal, china, japan oz nz, south america etc just see where it takes me really. my question is how much can i reasonably expect it to cost? i know this depends on what i want to do etc but im thinking i'm gonna need between £12 and 15,000 is that a realistic estimate or can it be done much cheaper? anyone else experiences/recommendations would be greatly appreciated,

cheers

It could be done much cheaper especially if you spend a lot of your time in the Asian countries (not including Japan). Japan is very expensive so you will go through a lot of money in a short amount of time. It is better to have too much money than not enough, so aim towards your £15000 target because if you were to reach that you could have a fair few luxuries in most places, but the less you have the less luxuries you are going to be able to give yourself. Before you go to Japan, you should definitely buy a JR pass if you plan on seeing more than a couple of cities. The pass can only be bought whilst outside of Japan, so you will have to buy it at an authorised JR office priror to reaching Japan.

Obviously that depends on how you travel (hostels, free accom or hotels etc), but I spent roughly 8000gbp on a 16month trip, which included absolutely everything (tickets, visas, insurance etc). I wasn't being particularly skrimpy or blowing out all the time, just average.

However, that 8000 did include a full 3months travel around Japan, the football World cup (inc tickets), and a major wedding amongst others, all of which hiked the cost up a chunk, and I also did a number of double backs etc, instead of following a logical straight forward route.

For 18 months travel, I spent about €12000, but I know that I could have done a lot of things much more cheaply( Ijust chose not to). Also, I worked in between so it's hard to give a good estimate.

I'm plannign another RTW at the moment, and I wont be working anywhere on this one. I am hoping to have about €8000 for 12 months. I think that can definitely get you where you want to go and still pull the stops out every so often :)

Hope that helps.

depending on a lot of things, but you should be fine. and distances are not too wild, too. i'm planning a 20k can. for a year (better yet, as long as possible, so possibly longer, we'll see, but a year definitely) - and that's bouncing back and forth over the globe. have fun!

I haven't been on my trip yet but to give you an idea my boyfriend and I are planning to go for at least 18 months if we can and we have an aim to save £25,000. This will cover everything though.. flights, jabs, some kit etc so based on this I would say your £12 - 15k is plenty.. if it isn't then we are in real trouble !!

hope you have fun on your trip
