Happy Independence Day

To all our American TP friends and family - hope y'all have a lovely free and independent day - with lots of fireworks, good food, good company, good conversation and all washed down by tonnes of alcohol!

So tell me what are you doing with your public holiday?

Yes, happy Independence Day.

I was in Los Angeles in this day in 1992 and had a great time. There was a real buzz of excitement in the air.

For a moment, I thought I saw July 24th, that you guys are doing it even earlier than last year's one week early.

To all United-Statesian members, Happy Independence Day!

Thank you to all of our international friends!!!

As you know, this is the USA's 231st birthday. People are celebrating in many different ways, from BBQ's to parades to ojust plain socializing. Over a million people were on Chicago's lakefront to watch a huge fireworks display and stuff themselves silly at the annual Taste of Chicago (week-long food fest).

Fireworks displays are being canceled all over the western US due to serious drought conditions. The central southern US (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, etc.) are under water. Several areas have received more than 30cm of rain in less than a day and rivers have overflown their banks and flooded whole communities up to the roofs of houses. Celebrations will likely be a bit tempered there.

What are we doing to celebrate? We slept in. Then we gave England the finger and had some coffee. Kidding about the finger. We had 3cm of rain last night, so that pretty much rules out yard work. Hmmmm, what else is there to do? Ah yes, cocktails should be coming up shortly, followed by some fairly rigorous lounging. I considered setting something on fire just to watch the glow, but it's already too warm and humid today.

On the upside, a thousand people are being granted citizenship today at Disney World in Florida. I imagine they're quite excited. They probably know more about American history than the average high school student as there is quite a detailed bit of study involved to become a US citizen.

Thanks again to all for your wishes, and enjoy your day as well.
