Hi,

I just wanted a bit of advice really. Should I…..

Sell my flat, move to London, get a better job and spend more time with my close friends

Or…

Sell my flat and go travel the world.

Seems easy to decide when I read that back but the sensible side of my brain always kicks in and puts me off.

Guess there’s always the fear that everybody else will get ahead of me on the ladder.

Would really appreciate your options. :-)

Maybe it is possible to get a better job in the place where you live right now, keep your flat and make sure you have enough holidays throughout the year to travel.
Things can be combined if you want.
And about moving up the ladder...really a career/work is not important, it is just something you have to like doing (otherwise it is total hell) with good people around you. Work is something you need to do the things apart from work that you like.
It is not a question of work or travel in my opinion. It should be part of a constant life, both.

That’s definitely true about constant life. I’m selling my flat either way, it’s just whether or not to get tied down again with a new job and stuff or up and leave the country! Decisions, decisions!!

By the way… I was in Utrecht for a few days over Queens Day. Utrecht was prima, bijzonder da Dom Tower!!

I am sure you will h ave time to travel while you are working there.
the currency is so huge. you can travel easily.

Aha, did you like the terraces at the canals as well, with all the boats passing by with people as drunk as possible.....I liked it....guess we just missed eachother

Hi Ditsygal

I dont think you would ever regret going travelling. I mean, it's hard to say from person to person. I know that I wrestled with the same choice 2 years ago. With every choice, there is a sacrifice. I know that by choosing travelling, I gave up some very good career opportunities in Ireland, but ultimately it doesnt bother me.

I lived more in the 18 months I was away than I did in my whole life before that (at least that's how it felt). I just got back home, and while it seems crazy to be going again, that's what I'm doing - heading off next Jan for another year hopefully. :)

Travelling is living, in my opinion. Working is really just about paying the bills. I say, sell the flat and hit the road. ;)

If u're selling the flat anyway, I'd say u should use part of the money to travel and save part of it for use later when u're back home.

Let's face it, I dont think any of us could travel the world without having to get back to the desk at some point in time. Part of the money saved from the sale of your flat will sustain u until u find your next job.

I'm somewhat in a similar situation where u r at. I have a very decent paying job with big bonuses to look forward to at the end of the year. But I've decided that I'll be leaving the desk to travel the world next year when I save enough money.

I guess I'll have to look for another job when I'm done with the travelling money and the cycle then starts all over again :)

I'd say go for it when u're still young as I dont think older people have the luxury to do the "work-save-quit-travel-work again" thingymagy as you will appreciate that as you grow older, the chances of getting a new job becomes slimmer. Well, that's how it is in Asia anyway!

You've obviously NEVER lived and worked in the UK....

My advice would be to ditch the world of mortgage and debts and get out there and see the world, before the beautiful places get swallowed up by tourism. You'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner....us westerners live in a world full of consumerism...you've obviously giving it some thought...do it for your sanity!!! You will enjoy it all better now while you're young and fit and active than when your decrepid rich and wrinkly.

not sure how much your flat is worth but if i was you I'd either just save up and rent my flat and go travelling OR sell my flat, get a cheaper one and rent that then use the money I had from the sale to go travelling. It will be much better to have something to come back to when you do return and you never know how much prices may go up by and you'll be off the ladder when you do get back...

Just my opinion and what I'm doing but good luck with whatever you choose

Hay ditsygal

A few months ago I was the same. Stuck in work doing the same thing day in day out in a bar that was going no where fast. I did a bit of inter-railing a few years back and enjoyed every minute of it. Since then I always taught about going away for a few months and see a large chunk of the world

6 weeks ago I finally decided that enough is enough. I want to travel. So I packed in my job. Off loaded my House and now I leave on Wednesday Morning for London to start my travel plan.

If I kept putting it off I would never do it. Before you know it your stuck in ruc with mortgage, partner, kids, I want that along with a successful career but the travel comes first in my eyes. Do it now while you can. The opportunity might not be there in a few years time!

Ay way thats my 2 cents worth - sorry for boring ya's for so long
