I've only got five weeks to do these. Do people think that's realistically enough time to have a look at all four?

In my opinion, no. Im going for 4 months and still feel like I am cramming a lot in. If I were you, Id pick 2 of those countries. Otherwise, you will be constantly travelling and not really getting to see the places and the culture.

I'm sure that its possible though.

Emily,
I had 5 weeks last year and went to see my Vietnamese GF. I spent 3 weeks in VN, less than a week in Cambodia, the rest in Thailand. That was my 12th trip to SEA and I had been to all the places before.

VN alone is going to take 14-20 days if you go from HCMC to HaNoi and stop to see/experience any of the country while on the open tour bus. Cambodia will take 7 days for Phnom Penh & Siem Reap. This leaves you a week for Thailand & Laos. No, your present plan is not practical.

Emily, I think you should revise your plan and drop one country.

My suggestion;
I assume you will land in BKK and hit Thailand first. Between Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai trekking and the beaches down south, allow 2 weeks for Thailand. Fly between Chiang Mai- Phuket or use overnight trains/buses to save days/money. Overland BKK-Siem Reap in one long day or fly this segment if budget allows, spend 3 day in Angkor. Bus/boat down to Phnom Penh, 2-3 days, overland to HCMC, open tour north to HaNoi, allow 2 weeks, fly Air Asia HAN-BKK, home. You are on the move most days, but at least this is feasible. Save Laos for another trip.

I hope this helps in your planning, send me a PM if you have specific questions. I have many photos of this area in my gallery that may help decide what you want to see.
Good luck with your trip.
