Merging maps....

Travel Forums System Talk Merging maps....

.... Right. I've finally finished building my TP travel map from my big trip a year or so ago. It's taken bl**dy ages. However, it's currently in 5seperate sections.

There is a merge map button.

What I want is confirmation from somebody that knows that if i try and merge my 5maps into one big one, they will keep the dates, order etc and it will work perfectly.

Basically, i want a Daams brother (or possibly Sander) to tell me that there is a backup of what i currently have, so if it all goes horribly wrong and crashes, I won't loose all my hard work and have somebody that isn't me to blame.

There is no "undo" function for the merge, but the information about individual destinations would never be lost, as we create a new trip, and then move the stops from one trip to the other (so they always exist at either). Also, you could select the trips to merge and click on the merge button, and nothing would happen yet. First we'd show you a confirmation screen (asking for a name for the new, merged, trip) with the entire list of destinations in the ordering they'd have after the merge.

However. We created the merge function primarily to allow people to merge imported "travellog" country-destinations into big "world trips". Merging fully formed trips together was not a use case, and hasn't gotten the testing it probably should've had. Looking at the code, I can see one potentially iffy problem with it if you'd do that, namely that the ordering of multiple destinations visited on the exact same day (which you seem to have a lot of) could potentially get lost. Most of the times it shouldn't, but that's not something we effectively constrain. (Also, not relevant to you, but in general, merging relies completely on dates, so never merge trips unless you have entered correct dates for each destination.)
So, if you merged right now, your visits to Copenhagen, Kolding and Padborg from the 14th of May 2005 might end up in the order "Kolding, Copenhagen, Padborg" or somesuch. Fixing it would be 'trivial' for you - just click on the arrows in the list - but given the very large number of destinations, I don't think you'd be too happy about doing that potentially many times. :)

I'll go add the 10-character fix to the code which will guarantee that ordering should remain the same (assuming correct dates, which take precedence). Will let you know once that's active on the live site, after which you should be able to merge without worries.

Thanks.

To be honest, a large number of points like that have been put in for technical reasons of routeing and distance [i was curious how close it would be to my own calculation which i did as i was going along] as opposed to actually being relevant. There aren't many occassions where there are more than 2 or 3 "relevant" places on the same date, so i could live with that and delete some

but the information about individual destinations would never be lost, as we create a new trip, and then move the stops from one trip to the other (so they always exist at either).

A-ha! I was going to ask that as well. So if i understand correctly, the existing 5maps etc would still be there, but i would also get a new 6th one with the whole lot in? If that is the case, then it's easy to try it and then delete the mergerd one afterwards if it hasn't worked so well.

Incidentally, the reason it is in 5 versions is that i found that afetr a certain number of entries (which varies) the map system just fell over. Foreign chars in place names already cause it huge problems in terms of time and committing to the database, and this seemed to get worse the more entries there were.

(Also, not relevant to you, but in general, merging relies completely on dates, so never merge trips unless you have entered correct dates for each destination.)

That could be fun. I'd like to build up a full version of my travels (or at least places that i have been) over my lifetime, but i couldn't work out how the heck to change the old Travel logs into a useful map. For most countries i visit so frequent that in the old travel log style, i had huge ranging dates (Germany, France etc i had down as a 15year travel because i was going through so often and in every year). As such, all the dates are overlapping, and i have no idea how to go about inputting them into the map system. Any ideas?

No, unfortunately for you that's exactly what doesn't happen. A trip on the maps is divided in two parts: one "trip" container, and many individual destinations that go in that container.
What we do with merging is create a new trip container, one by one move over each destination (not copying them, but removing them from the old trip container, and putting them into the new trip container), and then at the end delete the (now empty) trip containers for the old trips.
So you end up with the 6th trip, but the original five are gone. (It's just that in the very unlikely case of a problem halfway through the process, no destinations would be lost, as they'd either be in the new container, or still in the old container (which wouldn't have been deleted yet).)

Incidentally, the reason it is in 5 versions is that i found that afetr a certain number of entries (which varies) the map system just fell over.

I think it'd be your browser doing the falling over (the server should be able to handle it all), but yeah, at some point the amount of data to display gets so large that it all takes a very long time to show.

That could be fun. I'd like to build up a full version of my travels (or at least places that i have been) over my lifetime, but i couldn't work out how the heck to change the old Travel logs into a useful map. None. We struggled with this quite a bit during the development, but in the end had to conclude that there was simply not enough information present in the old travellogs to be able to create any kind of useful map when people followed the same philosophy as you did, of having their visits cover a huge timeperiod. So if you want accurate trips, I can't recommend anything better than editing the dates down to cover just one visit, and creating new destinations or trips for subsequent visits.

Ok, I got word that the change I made is live, so it should be completely safe to merge your trips now.
Furthermore, a special backup was made of the relevant database tables, so in the unlikely case something goes horribly wrong, we could probably restore your trips to their current status.
