I need help with my route from Vietnam to Thailand!

Travel Forums Asia I need help with my route from Vietnam to Thailand!

Hello!

I am slightly confused by all the different travel options and would just like to know from the experts (you lot out there!) how I can get from Ho Chi Minh City to Koh Pha Ngan as quickly and cheaply as possible.

I want to leave HCMC on the evening of 21st December 2007 and get to Ko Pha Ngan before Christmas Eve.

I know that I can fly to Bangkok (£120) and get train/ferry, or I could fly to Krabi (£180) and travel from there.

Because of the time of year and knowing it'll probably be really busy I'd like to try to book stuff now.

Has anyone travelled this route and could let me know the best way for me to do it, that doesn't cost a huge amount of money.

Thanks,

Louise :)

Louise,
I have two options that save your money, but you will probably not like them. The problem of course is that the discount airlines don't fly SGN-BKK yet. But, Air Asia does fly HAN-BKK for around $80 one way. Is there any chance you can leave from HaNoi rather than HCMC? If so, then problem solved. Air Asia; HAN-BKK, $80, then Air Asia; BKK-URT, $50, or the overnight train/bus to Surat Thani, ferry in the morning to the islands. I will guess you don't like that option and voted; NO!

My other suggestion may not be praised either. In the interest of saving your baht, how about take the bus; HCMC to Phnom Penh? You get in around 5:00pm, have a nice meal, good night sleep and take Air Asia; PNH-BKK flight at 8:40am, $65, tax included. With the $10 bus, you are in BKK for $75, long way from the over $240 charged by VN Air or Thai Air. The Air Asia flight; BKK-URT leaves at 10:50am. You have an hour between arrival from PNH and departure for URT. If Air Asia will allow you to book that flight, you are in Surat Thani in 2 days. That solves your time & money problem, but not sure you will be dancing in the streets with my suggestions. But, perhaps you are dancing in delight!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the advice. I have managed to swap a few things round and will now be leaving from Hanoi, so will get a cheapie flight to Bangkok!

Thanks again,

Louise

Louise,
I guess my suggestions did leave you dancin' down the street! I am glad you had some flexiblity in your travel plans. Hopefully one of the discount airline will start offering low airfares: SGN to BKK and make it easier on all the 'cheap charlies' out there.
