Hi Everyone!

We are planning to travel to Cuba in October for approx 2 weeks and want to both discover and relax..in that order! However, before we plan the trip we would appreciate your expert opinion on ...

(1) Suggested itnineraries as although we want to relax we also want to see as much of the island as possible

(2) Is October a good time to go to Cuba in terms of rainfall etc.. as we could go in April instead

Any advice very welcome!

Cheers
Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Just came from Cuba... It's a great place! :)

(1) I'd recommend staying a couple days in Vinales. It's an amazingly beautiful valley. We didn't have a chance to see the whole island, but I hear that Vinales is very different from rest of the country. They call it Cuba's garden or something. Also I understood that they grow most of the tabacco in Pinar del Rio area (where Vinales is located), if you're interested in seeing all that...

(2) October is hurricane season...

Hello Tracy and Vilma (sounds a bit Ironic...you mentioning the Hurricane season... Wilma "storm" was the latest big one for Cuba and Cancun)

Anyway, yes, I will also avoid the tropicall season if I were you and go in April instead.

Now Vinales is looooovely indeed....but this is not cuba.
So as the Historical center of the Habana.

Those areas are just Sterilized areas for tourist propaganda... it is nice though...I loved it because it was exactly like in the post card, or the brochures.
But if you travel from Santiago, Manzanillo, Bayamo... you will see the real Cuba.

Note that places like Cayo Coco...which I would also recommend is prohibited to Cubans...(only those carefully english speaking cubans are allowed there)...Lovely but not Cuba to my taste.

So, all the question is what do you really want to do there ? what is your budget ? and one of those important question : do you speak spanish ?

J.

Hi Jason and Vilma,

Thank you so much for your comments and recommendations.

Ideally it would be great to go to Santiago, Trinidad, Havana and Vinales...and spent some time relaxing in Varadero? Not sure if all this is possible though in the given timescale - we could go for 3 weeks in July instead but in April 15 days would be maximum. Budget wise we're OK, I've been desperate to go to Cuba for ages so expense isn't a huge issue fortunately.. well at this stage! I am really excited about going but want to make sure I do it properly and not rush into it.

I don't speak Spanish unfortunately.

Thanks again

Tracy:)

p.s.
why is Cayo Coco prohibited to Cubans?

Hi tracyx,

I'm not too sure whether u've done your Cuba adventure. But I would much appreciate that you can share with me.
I've been wanting to go Cuba couple of years back... but I thought it would be nice for me to go there with my newly wed wife as part of my honeymoon.
I'm a shoestring backpacker for years, I'm not in to high end and and luxury type of travel... since this is for my honeymoon trip
I would like to have a slight improvement in getting my self a good accomodation. Not necessary have to be a 5 stars but would prefer to have a presentable and decent type of hotel.

Tentatively I thought of heading there in the mid of Oct 2008. But come across this post stating that October is not a good mth to go.
Is there any good if I were to go in August or later in Dec?
I was thinking of having a good 14 days in Cuba. My self and my partner are those adventurous type, we tend to move around and like exploring, but of course we would like to sit back and relax too...

Is 14 days sufficient in term of exploring around the "recommended spots"? And is hiring a car to drive around is the best option to choose? Do share me your itinerary if possible. Much appreciate that.

Cheers,
Nick ;)

Never thought of going to Cuba on a vacation. I'm not quite sure, but are you allowed to go to Cuba if you live in the States? I heard that you can get there by hook or by crook, but i'm not quite sure....

I did hear, that the beaches are the most beautiful there. Can you take cruise there?

Excuse me for asking such stupid questions, i just don't really get to travel as much as i would like to

:)
